New York Times Article Gives LEED Certification a Black Eye
The LEED certification program developed by the U.S. Green Building Councilhas been under constant fire for the cumbersome paperwork involved with it application process. But you generally don't see many people questioning whether LEED-certified buildings actually save energy. Click here to read a New York Times article on why some building professionals and building owners are questioning LEED.

Sylvania Energy Solutions Network Saves End Users 276,875,000 kWh
Members of the Sylvania Energy Solutions Network (ESN) recently reported that as a result of energy-efficient equipment installed over the past 12 months, the ESCOs in the new group have already collectively eliminated an estimated 276,875,000 kWh through the energy efficiency upgrade projects. Data was collected from 17 member companies in August.

Osram Sylvania launched the Network as an alliance between its global lighting brand, ESCOs and its electrical distributors nationwide. Through the program, ESCOs can redeem QUICKPoints for various marketing communications project and training services. ESN offers ESCOs preferred benefits including a dedicated management team, field sales, application engineering and training options as well as marketing programs to support ESCO and distributor development of energy-efficient lighting upgrade projects. Seventy-three ESCOs have signed on for the program since its inception last fall. ESCOs develop, install, arrange, finance and manage available utility financial incentives for various energy efficiency projects. They can monitor and verify a completed project’s reduced energy use and assume the performance risk the project will achieve for the projected energy cost savings from a seven to 10-year period.

Border States Electric Takes on Centrosolar PV Panels in Southwest
Centrosolar America Inc., a subsidiary of CENTROSOLAR Group AG, and Border States Electric (BSE), Fargo, N.D., have entered into an agreement under which BSE will distribute CENTROSOLAR’s PV systems. BSE is one of the largest independent electrical distributors in the United States. It focuses on the construction, industrial, and utility industries.

As part of the agreement, BSE will market PV panels and complete solar systems from CENTROSOLAR at BSE branches in Phoenix, Arizona; Albuquerque, New Mexico; and Austin, Texas. The two companies are working together to target utility, commercial, and residential PV solar projects, which are expected to amount up to an order volume of 10MW until the end of 2010. Coupled with its current product offering in wind energy and its specialized projects team called Grid Solutions, it adds to BSE’s position as a leading distributor in the renewable energy market. 10 Portuguese Cities Install LED Streetlights
The implementation of efficient, attractive LED street lighting in Portugal has gathered pace over the summer as EnergiaViva has completed installations of the new UrbanLED street light in ten towns and cities. Installation work in 20 more Portuguese municipalities is expected to be completed this fall. The UrbanLED luminaires were introduced in April 2009, when they were installed on a street in the Portuguese town of Pombal. The solution, which uses LUXEON Rebel power LEDs from Philips Lumileds, provides an attractive combination of power efficiency, CRI, uniform light distribution and low maintenance and repair costs. These qualities have seen it quickly gain favor with other municipalities in Portugal. Click here for more information.

Wind Products Distributor WECS Blows Into the Wind Belt
WECS (Wind Energy Conversion Systems), an electrical distributor with a specialty in supplying electrical products and related materials to wind farms, now has operations in Kansas City and Dallas to capitialize on the wind belt that runs from Texas north up to the Dakotas.According to an article in the most recent edition of Electrical News, the company’s Dan Berg works out of Kansas City, and Mort Katz is now based in Dallas. Electrical Wholesaling magazine has written two feature articles on WECS: in July, 2001, and in April 2009.

T12s Still Popular Despite 2010 Phase-Out
Many building owners haven’t upgraded their four-foot T12 fluorescent lighting systems, despite the fact that much more efficient alternatives have been available for at least a decade, according to a recent study by the National Lighting Bureau (NLB), Silver Spring, Md.

“T12 fluorescent technology is 70 years old and is generally considered outdated when compared to the far more efficient T8 and T5 fluorescent technologies currently available,” said Susan Bloom, NLB’s vice chair and director of corporate communications for Philips Lighting and Philips Lighting Electronics. “Nonetheless, industry sales data reveal that less-efficient T12s still account for three out of every ten four-foot fluorescent lamps sold in the U.S. This means that literally millions of existing T12 fluorescent lighting sockets will have to be upgraded sooner rather than later, because the lack of these replacement ballasts will make T12 lighting harder to maintain. The good news is that owners and managers of America's commercial, industrial and institutional facilities who still rely on T12 lighting can rest assured that there are high-performing and more energy-efficient lighting technologies readily available to them that will also serve to support our national goals of energy independence and a clean environment.” For more info on NLB’s findings click here.

LED Lamps for MR16 Applications
Super High Power LED MR16 bulbs come in 1W and 3W styles for 12V and 120V lighting systems. Designed and engineered in a true retrofit shape compared to a halogen MR16 12V bulb, the LEDs deliver a powerful amount of light while offering a strong energy savings. The lamps are available in both warm white and daylight finishes and offers a long life up to 25,000 hours. They have have been tested by a government-approved lab to IESNA LM-79 standards and have received SSL Quality Advocates' Lighting Facts Labels. www.bulbrite.com

Lighting Panel
This lighting panel is designed to reduce energy usage with an easy to use, expandable lighting control solution. Siemens i-3 Control Technology is the next step in engineering innovation that enables users to easily integrate, install, and interface lighting control as either a stand-alone system or part of a networked energy management system. Expanded Fixture Family
Compatible with most popular track systems on the market, WAC track systems offer a wide range of designer finishes and lamping options. Hundreds of low- and line-voltage track heads are available and can be used with most industry track systems, as well as the firm's single-circuit and two-circuit track systems. In addition, hundreds of Quick Connect pendants and fixtures can be used with WAC 120V track system in conjunction with a Quick Connect adapter. New LEDme Track Luminaires feature a sleek, contemporary design and small size while using energy efficient low-voltage LEDs. The fixtures deliver a strong light output with no projected heat at 3,000K and 4,500K color temperatures, and a 50,000-hour potential life. Light source options include energy efficient LED, compact fluorescent, metal halide, halogen and incandescent. WAC Lighting
