Acme C3 Powerwise Transformers are 30% better in efficiency performance than standard TP1 transformers making them perfect for LEED installations and upgrading older transformers that are even more inefficient. Thanks to a more efficient core and higher-grade electrical steel that minimizes losses, these energy-efficient units exceed the requirements of the U.S. Department of Energy Candidate Standard Level (CSL) 3 performance standard. Visit www.acmepowerdist.com/C3 for more information.

Some LED Manufacturers Jumping the Gun on Using the DOE's Lighting Facts Label
A recent “Postings from Jim Brodrick,” a popular e-mail update on the solid-state lighting market that’s published regularly by the head man at the DOE Solid State Lighting program, said more than 150 manufacturers, 40 retailers, and another 40 lighting designers and energy efficiency organizations have all taken the Lighting Facts pledge. The list of the 160 LED products that qualify to use the Lighting Facts label is up on the website.

Similar to a nutrition label, the Lighting Facts Label provides a quick summary of product performance data. Luminaire manufacturers who take the SSL Quality Advocates pledge agree to use the label to disclose performance results in five areas — lumens, efficacy, watts, correlated color temperature (CCT) and color rendering index (CRI) — as measured by the new industry standard for testing photometric performance, IES LM-79-2008. But reports have surfaced, including one in LEDs magazine, on misuse of the label, and Brodrick said in a New York Times report that DOE has identified at least 25 cases of misuse.

Duke Energy Powers Up Wind Projects
Power company Duke Energy, Charlotte, N.C., said Oct. 1 that wind power projects in Wyoming and Pennsylvania are now up and running. Duke's 70mW project about 95 miles east of Pittsburgh is producing electricity for Akron, Ohio-based FirstEnergy. It's Duke's first wind farm in the eastern U.S. Duke also has a 42mW project now running in Cheyenne, Wyo. A recent Reuters report said Duke Energy Corp. has also agreed to fund a pilot study of commercial wind turbines in the waters offshore of North Carolina, and has contracted with the University of North Carolina (UNC) at Chapel Hill to place up to three wind turbines in Pamlico Sound. Big Apple Building Owners to Get Access to $1 Billion in Green Financing for Retrofit Projects
A report at www.greenerbuildings.com says New York owners of multi-family rental and co-ops have an additional source of capital for retrofit projects that will enhance the energy efficiency of their properties. The Green Financing Initiative being managed by the Community Preservation Corp. is a public-private consortium of, lenders, pension funds and the state of New York. It's expected to help building owners retrofit approximately 15,000 housing units over the next three years in low, moderate and middle-income properties.

FPL's NextEra Energy Ready To Power Up Largest Photovoltaic Field in the United States
Florida Power & Light Co., Juno Beach, Fla., announced Oct. 7 that it expects its DeSoto Next Generation Solar Energy Center in Arcadia, Fla., to begin delivering electricity to customers later this month – ahead of schedule. The facility will overtake Nevada’s Nellis Solar Power Plant for the title of largest solar photovoltaic solar facility in the nation and in North America. Constructed in less than a year, the DeSoto Next Generation Solar Energy Center uses over 90,000 photovoltaic panels to turn the sun's rays into electricity to power more than 3,000 homes.

The DeSoto Next Generation Solar Energy Center is one of three new commercial-scale, renewable, solar power plants FPL is building in Florida, along with solar energy centers in Martin County and at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center. Together, these facilities will have 110 mW of capacity by the end of 2010 and are expected to make Florida the second largest solar power-producing state in the country. More info.

Dow Sees Huge Growth for New Solar Shingle
The Dow Chemical Co.’s Dow Solar Solution divisions unveiled its line of Dow Powerhouse Solar Shingles on Oct. 5. Dow has developed photovoltaic solar panels in the form of solar shingles that can be integrated into rooftops with standard asphalt shingle materials. The solar shingle systems are expected to be available in limited quantities by mid-2010 and projected to be more widely available in 2011. According to a Reuters report, mega-builders Lennar Corp and Pulte Homes, two of the nation’s largest homebuilders, have agreed to install the shingles in some of their homes.

Philips is First Entrant in L-Prize Competition
The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) announced on Sept. 24 that the Bright Tomorrow Lighting Prize (L Prize) competition has received its first entrant, a product from Philips Electronics. Philips has developed, manufactured and will bring to market an LED replacement for the common 60W incandescent light bulb. DOE launched the L Prize initiative to spur development of high-quality, high-efficiency LED replacements for the common light bulb. Check out Electrical Marketing's LiveWire for more info on Philips entry.

LED Post Light
The new Acrylic Washington PostLite LED luminaires from Holophane combine the visual appeal of a historic looking fixture with the performance and environmental benefits provided by modern LED technology. The decorative post-top luminaires feature a new housing design with dedicated heat sink for LED thermal management and maximum life. Washington PostLite LED luminaires are designed for use with existing Holophane acrylic globes and pole locations to reduce purchase and installation costs. A low glare, injection-molded optical system offers asymmetric and symmetric distribution for design flexibility and is optimized to meet Illuminating Engineering Society (IES) RP8 street lighting recommended practice. The finned aluminum housing acts as a dedicated heat sink, with the metalized reflector or “lily” providing the main beam. The LED driver has a rated life of 50,000 hours with maintenance eased by an access door for the electronic driver and photocell receptacle. www.holophane.com
