Acme C3 Powerwise Transformers are 30% better in
efficiency performance than standard TP1 transformers making them
perfect for LEED installations and upgrading older transformers that are
even more inefficient. Thanks to a more efficient core and higher-grade
electrical steel that minimizes losses, these energy-efficient units
exceed the requirements of the U.S. Department of Energy Candidate
Standard Level (CSL) 3 performance standard. Visit www.acmepowerdist.com/C3 for

Visitors to Washington, D.C., may have been surprised to find a
most unusual encampment National Mall – the Solar Decathlon, a now
annual competition where 20 teams of college students from around the
world are showing off their green dream homes in a competition to
design, build and operate the most attractive, effective and
energy-efficient solar-powered house.
Developed by the U.S. Department of Energy to showcase photovoltaics and
green building design, the Solar Decathlon is open to the public.
One of the main sponsors for the event is Schneider Electric, Palatine,
Ill., and its products are used throughout the solar homes. Energy
management solutions incorporated into the houses include Xantrex solar
inverters, TAC building automation and control, PELCO security, Juno
lighting, Power Logic metering and software solutions, Square D
electrical distribution equipment, programmable logic controllers and
lighting controls.
As a sponsor of Solar Decathlon 2009, Schneider Electric has supplied
the solar village microgrid with design, site and engineering services
as well as the electrical distribution equipment required to safely and
reliably connect the solar village to Pepco, the utility service on the
National Mall, for the duration of the event. The Net Metering contest
showcases these capabilities and illustrates how residential solar
electric systems operate when connected with the power grid.

GE Energy, Atlanta, has taken a commanding lead in the number of
2009 wind farms installations, with its wind turbines being installed in
21 of the 51 wind farms currently under construction, according to a report
published by the American Wind Energy Association (AWEA), Washington,
D.C., on Oct. 20. Siemens and Vestas are also major players right now,
with their wind turbines each being installed in eight wind farms.
AWEA reported that the U.S. wind energy industry installed 1,649 MW of
new power generating capacity in the third quarter — an amount higher
than either the second quarter of 2009 or the third quarter of 2008 —
bringing the total capacity added this year to date to over 5,800 MW.
AWEA also reported that wind turbine manufacturing still lags below 2008
levels, in both production and new announcements.
Since the early July announcement of rules to implement the stimulus
bill, the wind industry has seen over 1,600 MW (enough to serve the
equivalent of 480,000 average households) of completed projects, and
over 1,700 MW of construction starts. The total wind power capacity now
operating in the U.S. is over 31,000 MW, generating enough electricity
to power the equivalent of nearly 9 million homes, avoiding the
emissions of 57 million tons of carbon annually and reducing expected
carbon emissions from the electricity sector by 2.5 percent.

The current economic downturn is not sidetracking state-level
efforts to make the most of energy efficiency as the cheapest, cleanest
and quickest of all energy resources, according to a 50-state scorecard
on energy efficiency policies, programs, and practices from the American
Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy (ACEEE), Washington, D.C.
The 2009 State Energy
Efficiency Scorecard, which ranks states in six categories,
concludes that the 10 states doing the most to implement energy
efficiency are (ranked highest to lowest): California, Massachusetts,
Connecticut, Oregon, New York, Vermont, Washington, Minnesota, Rhode
Island and Maine. ACEEE said the states that most need to improve are
Arkansas, Missouri, Louisiana, Georgia, Alaska, West Virginia, Nebraska,
Alabama, Mississippi, North Dakota and Wyoming.
"By embracing a wide range of cost-effective energy efficiency
strategies, the leading states are demonstrating that efficiency is
their 'first fuel' to meet energy demands while growing their
economies," said Maggie Eldridge, ACEEE research associate and lead
author of the report. “States continue to raise the bar with
comprehensive strategies to improve efficiency in their buildings,
industry, and transportation systems. They are the ‘living
laboratories’ of energy efficiency.”
The 2009 report is ACEEE’s third edition of its annual state-by-state
ranking on the adoption and implementation of energy efficiency
policies, which aims to recognize leadership among the states and
identify best practices.
The scorecard examines six state energy efficiency policy areas:
utility-sector and public benefits programs and policies; transportation
polices; building energy codes; combined heat and power; state
government initiatives; and appliance efficiency standards.
