DOE backs SolarCity project
U.S. Energy Secretary Steven Chu announced a DOE offer of a conditional commitment for a partial guarantee of a $344 million loan to help secure financing for a SolarCity project. As part of the project, SolarCity, based in San Mateo, Calif., plans to partner with the country’s leading military housing-privatization developers to install, own and operate up to 160,000 rooftop solar installations on as many as 124 military housing developments across 33 U.S. states. The project is expected to create more than $1 billion in solar projects and 371MW of new solar generation capacity. USRG Renewable Finance, a subsidiary of U.S. Renewables Group, will serve as the lead lender for the project in partnership with BofA Merrill Lynch. Details

LEDs make their way into aquarium market
It was only a matter of time... Those ghastly fluorescent bulbs that seemed to be sold with every aquarium starter-kit may be a thing of the past, according to this post at www.fishchannel.com.

Schneider Electric's Pauley speaks out for building energy data collection
Jim Pauley, senior V.P. of governmental relations and external affairs for Schneider Electric, has an article up on the website Greener Buildings where he promotes a public-private partnership to continue a program likely to be defunded by Congress.

In the article, "Are We Missing the Green Buildings Deal of a Lifetime?", Pauley argues that the Commercial Building Energy Consumption Survey (CBECS) is a relatively inexpensive ($12 million) program that has become a source of data vital to the further development of more efficient commercial buildings. The program's most recent data is now rather old, dating to 2003, and completion of the scheduled 2011 survey is uncertain. Pauley suggests that the benefits to users as diverse as the Energy Star program and suppliers of energy efficiency technology who use it as a benchmark are too important to let the program go.

"From my perspective, it's too big for any one group to tackle, but a public-private approach involving private companies, trade groups, academics and the public sector may be just what we need to carry out the equivalent of a Green Buildings Census and keep the industry on solid footing." Cree LEDs light Waste Connections facility
In a move to improve lighting quality and safety at its Cold Canyon Material Recovery Facility (MRF) in San Luis Obispo, Calif., Waste Connections Inc. upgraded its lighting system with Cree-powered Xeralux LED high-bay fixtures. Xeralux fixtures feature Cree XLamp XP-G LEDs, helping Waste Connections reduce its energy costs by almost two-thirds and nearly eliminating its maintenance costs. "Our previous lighting technology didn't deliver the high-quality light our facility needed," said John Ryan, facilities manager at Cold Canyon. "Now, not only do we seem to have more light, but we also have a brighter, whiter light that is very pleasing. The employees love it."

The Xeralux Light Engine for High Bay (XLE-HB) replaced more than 80 400W metal-halide lamps, sockets and ballasts with high-quality LED light. According to Waste Connections' analysis of site energy consumption, the Cold Canyon MRF is now saving 260-285 kWh per day, translating to more than $13,000 per year. As a result, Waste Connections anticipates a payback time of less than three years and the virtual elimination of maintenance due to the 50,000 hour projected lifetime of the installed products.

Acuity's submersible Winona LED fixtures illuminate 9/11 Memorial
Acuity Brands Inc. proudly announced that products from its Winona Lighting unit are part of the National September 11 Memorial at New York’s Ground-Zero. The Memorial was architecturally designed to feature twin reflecting pools marking the exact footprints of the fallen towers. The pools are illuminated by 1,500 feet of Winline 607 LED Submersible luminaires. Also, Winline 203W Surface Linear Wet luminaires provide illumination to the Names Parapet, a low wall projecting from the edge surrounding the pools where the names of the nearly 3,000 victims are memorialized.
In 2005, the design of this enormous illumination undertaking was awarded to the architectural lighting design firm of Fisher Marantz Stone in New York City. Paul Marantz, founder and design principal, imagined that LEDs would be an appropriate lighting solution, but in 2005 a LED linear submersible luminaire that could be placed beneath a thirty-foot waterfall, offering low maintenance, proper heat dissipation, and high-quality light output was years away. As the project developed, Marantz and the Winona Lighting team began discussions on the characteristics required for such a demanding application. After several years of engineering and custom innovation efforts by Winona Lighting, the resulting solution was the Winline 607 LED Submersible light.
As Memorial visitors approach the pools, the names of the victims glow through the bronze stencil cutouts in the surrounding parapet. The names are illuminated by three-hundred and fourteen Winline 203W Surface Linear Wet LED luminaires in varying lengths, installed inside the bronze parapet. These fixtures have a very small profile and offer superior light output. Click here for more details on this lighting project.

Circuit breakers for wind farms
The VCP-Wind medium-voltage vacuum circuit breaker is designed specifically for wind applications. The new, compact circuit breaker is engineered to provide reliable and robust circuit protection for wind farm collector substations. It's designed to reliably switch high stress currents and require no cooling or ventilation systems. Additionally, the circuit breakers are encapsulated in epoxy resin material and are designed to require virtually no maintenance over the product life cycle. The 38kV VCP-Wind breakers offer current ratings up to 2,000A without fan cooling and 31.5kA. They meet American National Standards Institute (ANSI) and Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) C37.09 standards. www.eaton.com

Electronic HID ballasts
These low-frequency, electronic HID metal-halide ballasts (22W to 175W) are up to 15 percent more energy-efficient than traditional magnetic ballasts. Improved lumen maintenance yields opportunities for fewer or lower wattage fixtures. Longer effective lamp life results in maintenance savings. These ballasts optimize the lamp as it ages and automatically shut down when they sense end of lamp life. They are compact in size, and offer lower noise, lighter weight and have faster strike/restrike times than magnetic ballasts. www.fulham.com

Halogen A19 lamps
Bulbrite’s Eco-Friendly Halogen A19 lamp complies with the Energy Independence and Security Act (EISA), which takes effect Jan. 1, 2012 and requires general-service light bulbs to operate up to 30 percent more efficiently than current standards require. Consumers will gain the benefits of higher efficiency and superior lighting quality, giving them an alternative to CFLs and LEDs. The Halogen A19 is fully dimmable and can last up to 1,000 hours. In comparison to its incandescent replacements, Bulbrite’s Eco-Friendly Halogen A19 significantly reduces energy consumption without sacrificing light output, as a 72W Halogen A19 equals a 100W incandescent; a 53W Halogen A19 equals a 75W incandescent; and a 43W Halogen A19 equals 60W incandescent.
