Change Proposals
Pending Code Change Item for 2011
NEC
As noted in the NEC Committee Report on
Proposals, 2010 Annual Revision Cycle, Code-Making Panel 18 has
voted to accept a Code change submitted by Vince Baclawski, National
Electrical Manufacturers Association, (Log #1166 NEC-P18). Baclawski
recommended adding a second paragraph to 406.5 that would read as
follows: "Receptacle faceplates mounted inside a box having a
recessed-mounted receptacle, shall effectively close the opening and
seat against the mounting surface." He notes, "the term 'effectively
closed' is used in 110.12(A) to express the intent of the requirement,
but to recognize the need for some tolerance in application of the
requirement. The language in the existing text in 406.5 is absolute and
does not afford listing standards any tolerance in applying the
requirement."
The document is open for public review and comment through October
23, 2009. You can download
an electronic version of the report via the NFPA Web site.
All interested parties are urged to read this report and submit
their
comments on the forms provided in the report. Each comment received on
or before the closing date of the comment period will be considered and
acted upon by the NEC Code Committee. The results of the committee
action will be published in the NEC Committee Report on
Comments,
which will be made available to all who request it. The Report on
Comments mail date is scheduled for March 29, 2010.

spaces, or machine/control rooms (not including the traveling cables

Code News Update
California and the 2008 NEC
The California Department of Housing and Community
Development (HCD) proposes to adopt by reference the 2008 edition of
the
NEC, with amendments, into the 2010 California Electrical Code (CEC),
California Code of Regulations, Title 24, Part 3. The amendments relate
to the following sections of the NEC:
- Article 334 (Nonmetallic-Sheathed Cable)
- Article 394 (Concealed Knob and Tube Wiring)
- Article 450 (Transformers and Transformer Vaults)
- Article 625 (Electric Vehicle Charging System)
In addition, the HCD has proposed to not adopt Articles
500, 501, 502, 503, 504, 505, 506, 510, 511, 513, 514, 515, 516, 517,
520, 522, 525, 530, 540, 547, 550, 551, 552, 553, 555, 604, 605, 610,
630, 640, 645, 647, 650, 660, 665, 668, 669, 670, 675, 685, 695, 701,
and 760, as well as Annexes A, B, C, D, E, F, G, and H. These Code
sections are not included because they do not fall within the
occupancies regulated by the HCD.
