All courses feature highly polished workshop notes and PowerPoint presentations. These workshops are available for in-house or captive workshops.

2010 Open Registration Workshops:

  • Symmetrical Components: March 11-12
  • Fundamentals of Power Distribution: March 31-April 2
  • Overcurrent Protection: May 26-28
  • Distribution Voltage Regulation: August 17-19
Registration information will be available soon.
2010 Course Descriptions

Basic Electricity
This course covers AC/DC fundamentals, Ohm's Law, typical load, and generation concepts. Addresses relationships between voltage, ohms, amperes, three-phase voltage, current and power in wye/delta circuits, the effects of resistors, inductors, and capacitors. Calculate single- and three-phase values and use multimeters in lab for problem solving work-related DC circuits.

Switchgear Maintenance
The Switchgear Maintenance program from Eaton Corp. is designed for engineers, technicians, and others who are responsible for maintaining low-voltage and medium-voltage power circuit breaker switchgear. Emphasis is on inspecting, evaluating tests, and understanding the engineered safety systems. Training is conducted by experienced power systems engineers.
For registration and further information on this and other course offerings, visit us at: http://www.eaton.com.

Battery Maintenance and Testing
This course covers battery systems applications, components, types, NFPA 70E and IEEE requirements, operating principles, and causes of failure for vented lead acid, valve-regulated lead acid, and nickel-cadium batteries. Students will use Megger BITE, digital hydrometers, multimeters, digital low-resistance ohmmeters(DLRO), insulation resistance testers, and insulated/non-sparking hand tools in lab.

Overcurrent Protection Basics for Designers & Specifiers
It's hard to overstate the importance that overcurrent protection devices play in safeguarding equipment and people while minimizing downtime in today's industrial and commercial environments. Recent changes in the NEC, NFPA 70E, and UL standards have created challenges for those responsible for designing or maintaining electrical power systems and equipment. This half-day seminar will provide you with an up-to-date understanding of key overcurrent protection issues. A certificate of completion (four instruction hours) will be provided for those needing CEU credits.
To learn more about the seminar and to register securely, please visit www.ferrazshawmut.com.

Principles and Applications of Fuel Cell Technology
Fuel cell technologies are moving out of the research lab and are rapidly becoming economically competitive solutions in niche market applications such as lift trucks, backup power, and combined heat and power. As fuel cell technologies are adopted on a wider basis, engineers will need to understand their value proposition and operating principles. This two-day seminar is designed to give engineers and technicians a fundamental understanding of fuel cell system operation and provide examples of real-world applications. This course focuses on applications where fuel cell technologies are being adopted as economically competitive solutions to batteries and diesel generators. This seminar will benefit engineers, material scientists, and technical managers interested in energy efficiency, energy storage, and related fields.
