Electrical
Contracting Foundation Launches Photovoltaic Research Project
To
measure the size of the photovoltaic industry, the Electrical
Contracting Foundation is funding a research project that will
recommend
strategies for electrical contractors to get into the business. The
study, which will be led by Thomas Glavinich, a professor at the
University of Kansas, will also describe best practices for installing
photovoltaic systems. The National Electrical Contractors Association
will use the results of the study to develop a National Electrical
Installation Standard on photovoltaic systems. Photovoltaic systems
were
once used solely for off-grid applications, but new photosensitive
roofing and glazing materials are now expanding the use of solar
energy.
Entire buildings are being turned into electrical generators, which
reduces the peak demand on electrical utility grids. For more
information, visit the Electrical
Contracting Foundation Web site.

Insulation Testing Just Got Easier!
AEMC Instruments' Megohmmeter Model 5070 is the only fully automated
5,000V graphical insulation tester, which provides insulation
measurements to 10Tohm. Test results include DAR, PI, DD, Capacitance,
Leakage Current as well as programmable temperature correction of
resistance readings. It offers the ability to program up to three step
voltage profiles (40 to 5,100V), each containing up to five steps. It
has
an RS-232 interface and an extensive memory function, which permits
storage results in files specific to the device under test. Includes
DataView Lite software for data storage, analysis and report
generation.

Critical Power
Coalition to Address Power Quality and Reliability Issues
On Aug. 14, 2003, a series of events led to one of the
largest blackouts in North America's history, which cut off power to 50
million consumers in the Northeast and Canada. To improve the quality,
reliability, and continuity of electrical power, vendors and end-users
have formed the Critical Power Coalition (CPC). The national
organization plans to build a presence in Washington, D.C., promote the
sharing of best practices, and differentiate the needs of the critical
power industry from those of the grid power industry. Visit the CPC Web site or
download a white
paper for more information.

Reducing Ground Loops
When it comes to ground potential, sometimes the
shortest distance between two points is a loop. If you're having
problems with your process controls and electrical instrumentation,
there's a good chance the source is a ground loop. Editorial Director
John
DeDad examines how to reduce them with signal isolators. Visit EC&M's Web site for the full
article.
Eye on Safety
New Jersey electrical contracting firms are putting
safety first by completing a 30-hour safety training program. The
Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) developed the
program to fulfill the requirements of many insurance companies. The
International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) Local 164 in
Paramus, N.J., offers the training class to its 3,900 members to meet
end-users' demand for advanced certification. "The construction
industry
has seen a surge in the number of requests from commercial, industrial,
and residential developers, builders, and contractors for skilled
workers who have successfully completed and achieved this OSHA
