Study Reports
No
Cost Savings From Online Reverse Auctions
Reverse online auctions may promise to deliver cost
savings in several industries, including construction, but a new study
from two Louisiana State University professors found no data to
support these claims. The researchers reviewed hundreds of published
articles, papers, and reports on the auctioning of commodities and
services to come to their conclusion. The second phase of the study
will
evaluate the effect of online reverse auctions on bidding processes,
project relationships, and work quality in the construction industry.
To
learn more about online reverse auctions, read "Buyers Beware: The Ins
and Outs of Reverse Auctions" on page C14 of the February issue of
EC&M.

Measure Low Resistance With High Accuracy
The 10A Micro-Ohmmeter Model 6250 measures low resistance with results
within 0.05%. Resistance measurements are automatically calculated,
taking into account the measurement value, ambient temperature, metal
type and metal temperature co-efficient. Metal temperature can be
manually entered by the operator or directly measured with an optional
RTD temperature probe. Uniquely designed to conduct tests on both
resistive and inductive material, with operator selection directly from
the front panel. Up to 1,500 measurements can be stored and printed
directly to a printer or from a PC. www.aemc.com
Professional Engineers
Market Their Services on the Internet
If your company is thinking about launching a
professional Web site, you no longer have to have ".com" at the end of
your URL. A Boston-based Internet registry has tailored domains for the
engineering industry. EnCirca has
developed an "eng.pro" domain that allows an engineer to use a fully
functioning Internet address that can be used for e-mail, Web sites,
and
marketing in search engines. The company has already introduced other
industry-specific domains such as law.pro for lawyers, med.pro for
medical doctors, and cpa.pro for accountants.
Texas
Government to Spend Millions of Dollars on Architectural and
Engineering
Services
The Texas government spent more than $874 million
on
architectural and engineering services in the last two fiscal years,
according to the Austin Business Journal, and new construction
projects are in the pipeline. Texas A&M University plans to build a new
campus in San Antonio, which will open in 2009. The university has also
solicited bids from firms interested in providing electrical and
engineering services for campus projects. The McLennan Community
College
board of trustees also voted to hold a countywide election on a $73
million bond package for campus construction projects, such as a new
science building, additional classroom space, and an emergency services
training center.

EC&M Web site
by
March 24 to cast your vote in EC&M's Product of the Year
competition and help us to identify the best new product introduced in
2004 for the electrical industry. When you visit the EC&M Product of the
Year page, an automatic
poll will pop up. (Note: If you have a pop-up blocker
program, it may prevent you from seeing the poll.) You then need to
type
in your contact information, choose your favorite product, and click

determine the Platinum Award winner. The competition has honored
innovation and excellence in product development in the electrical
industry for the past five years.

Today's telecommunications systems now carry more than
just voice and data. As buildings are increasingly using Internet
protocol, the information carried on a building's system can vary from
security supervision to building control or automation. To reflect this
current trend, BICSI has changed its mission to serve the information
transport industry. The telecommunciations association made the
announcement at the recent BICSI 2005 Winter Conference in Orlando,
Fla.

Eye on Safety
The IEEE Product Safety Engineering Society (PSES)
gives
engineers a professional venue for publishing their research results
and
sharing information on ways to minimize hazardous situations. The
committee has been around since 1987, but it became an IEEE society
last
January. Since that time, the PSES has become the only IEEE society to
offer completely electronic services. Members communicate through an
automatic e-mail server and discuss regulations and standards online.
The virtual society will soon launch an online newsletter and plans to
publish a journal in 2006 on the PSES
Web site.
