New Alliance
Formed to
Help Northwest Industries Increase Energy Efficiency
The Northwest Energy Efficiency Alliance, based in
Portland, Ore., recently launched the Industrial Efficiency Alliance
(IEA) to
help industries in the Northwest adopt more energy-efficient business
practices. According to Bob Helm, P.E., the Alliance’s industrial sector
senior manager who has been named to lead the new venture, the IEA will
offer training, information, best practices, and cooperative marketing
opportunities to
industrial plant managers, corporate officers and their suppliers in
Idaho, Montana, Oregon, and Washington for using energy more
efficiently. With help from suppliers, which include engineering
consultants and equipment manufacturers, the IEA supports a "whole
systems" approach -- pumps, motors, compressed air, and refrigeration --
to energy
efficiency, as opposed to merely swapping out individual components.
The
group claims that this approach offers customers energy savings of 10%
or more, compared to 2% or 3% for components alone. For more information
on
the IEA, call (888) 720-6823 or visit www.industrialefficiencyalliance.org/.

Measure Low Resistance with High Accuracy
The 10A Micro-Ohmmeter Model 6250 measures low resistance with results
within 0.05%. Resistance measurements are automatically calculated,
taking into account the measurement value, ambient temperature, metal
type and metal temperature co-efficient. Metal temperature can be
manually entered by the operator or directly measured with an optional
RTD temperature probe. Uniquely designed to conduct tests on both
resistive and inductive material, with operator selection directly from
the front panel. Up to 1500 measurements can be stored and printed
directly to a printer or from a PC. www.aemc.com
BICSI Launches
Wireless Design Specialty
Network designers with proven wireless knowledge are in
greater demand these days, as the use of wireless
technology continues to skyrocket. To meet this demand, BICSI has
created the RCDD/Wireless Design (WD) Specialty certification. Any
active RCDD with at least two years of documentable experience in
wireless design may sit for the
exam. Those awarded the WD Specialty certification will have
demonstrated knowledge and expertise in selected areas of wireless
design, including
regulations, standards, and codes; wireless fundamentals, system
components, and design considerations; point-to-point and
point-to-multipoint systems; personal area networks; and wireless local
areas networks. And within the two-year registration period after
passing the
exam, all RCDD/WD Specialists must attend a minimum of 30 hours of
WD-specific training. For more information, call (800) 242-7405 or

IEEE to
Develop New Surge Protection Standard and Revise Others
The IEEE recently announced it’s working on a new
standard for surge voltage protection in AC rotating machinery.
IEEE PC62.21.1 standard, "Recommended Practice for the Application of
Surge Voltage Protective Equipment on AC Rotating Machinery Rated 1000V
or Greater and Less than 30kV, Generators and Single-Turn Coil Motors,"
will provide guidance in selecting and applying surge protective
devices
for rotating generators. In addition, the organization is also revising
several existing
standards, including updates to IEEE PC62.23, "Application Guide for
Surge Protection of Electric Generating Plants," IEEE P649, "Standard
for Qualifying Class 1E Motor Control Centers for Nuclear Power
Generating Stations," and IEEE PC57.12.34, "Requirements for
Pad-Mounted, Compartmental Type, Self Cooled; Three-Phase Distribution
Transformers, 5MVA and Smaller; High-Voltage, 34.5kV Nominal System
Voltage and Below; Low-Voltage, 15kV Nominal System Voltage and Below."
