NCQLP Announces
GSA Mandate for Lighting-Certified Practitioners
The U.S. General Services Administration has recognized
the National Council on Qualifications for the Lighting Professions
(NCQLP) lighting-certification program by including a reference to it
in
its "Facilities Standards for Public Buildings Service." The standard
requires lighting design on all lighting projects in all federal
buildings to be performed or supervised by a practitioner credentialed
as Lighting Certified (LC) by NCQLP. The 2005 examination for
certification will be held on Nov. 5. The deadline for early
registration is Aug. 12; the final deadline is Sept. 23. For more

Photoelectric
and Photointerrupter Sensors Drive North American Proximity Sensor
Market Growth
According to a recent report from Venture Development
Corporation (VDC), growth in demand for photoelectric and
photointerrupter sensors will be the largest contributor to the overall
growth in the North American proximity and photoelectric sensor market.
VDC forecasts a combined compound annual growth rate of 5.8% for the
two
sensor types through 2007, compared to an overall North American growth
rate forecast of 4.7%. Currently, the markets for photoelectric and
photointerrupter sensors comprise 41% of the $617.2 million market, the
largest share of the overall 2004 North American proximity and
photoelectric sensor market. The largest industry shares of the 2004
photoelectric sensor shipments were for use in material handling,
packaging equipment, and electronics/semiconductor manufacturing
equipment applications. Office automation equipment applications
accounted for nearly half of 2004 shipments of the photointerrupter
sensors.
NEMA/NECA
Release Second Joint National Electric Installation Standard
NECA/NEMA 605, "Nonmetallic Underground Utility Duct"
has just been published. It's the second installation standard jointly
developed by NECA and NEMA in the National Electrical Installation
Standards (NEIS) series. The first was NECA/NEMA 105-2002, "Recommended
Practice for Installing Metal Cable Tray Systems." Many of the NEIS
published to date have been developed in collaboration with other

Nassau County Department of Public
Works Requests Bids for Electrical Upgrade
Nassau County Department of Public Works in Mineola,
Long Island, N.Y., is requesting bids for the electrical upgrade of the
Holocaust Memorial and Education Center. The contract consists of a new
electrical service and upgrade of the electrical distribution system.
Additional branch circuits, outlets, and lighting to meet the
requirements of the center will be required, including replacement of
old receptacles and toggle switches. There will be a mandatory pre-bid
meeting/walk through at the project site on July 8 at 10 a.m. EST. The
mandatory pre-bid site visit form must be included with the bid bond.

Apron Lighting
Upgrade Project at LAX
Los Angeles World Airports seeks contractors to upgrade
apron lighting at Terminals 1-8 and Tom Bradley International Terminal.
The upgraded lighting must meet current IES recommendations for apron
lighting and alley taxiways, with a minimum of 1 footcandle both
horizontal lighting level at points 200 feet from the edge of the

Eye on Safety
L.E. Myers
Convicted of Violating Federal Safety Rules
Rolling Meadows, Ill.-based L.E. Myers, provider of
power line construction and repair services to public utilities
nationwide, was convicted May 19 of a single misdemeanor count of
willfully violating federal safety regulations in the electrocution of
rookie lineman Blake Lane, 20, in 1999. Lane was working on a 120-foot
steel transmission tower in Mt. Prospect, Ill. According to
prosecutors,
Lane wasn't warned by his foreman that the line was live.
Myers, a subsidiary of MYR Group, was acquitted of a second misdemeanor
account in the incident that led to the death of Wade Cumpston, 43, in
Plainfield, Ill., who died in 2000 after making contact with a
grounding
cable while working in an uninsulated bucket. OSHA states that Myers
failed to properly train staff and that proper grounding would have
avoided the deaths.
The U.S. Dept. of Labor had proposed a $423,000 fine related to the
deaths. The maximum penalty under federal law for the misdemeanor count
is a $500,000 fine and five years probation.
