IEEE Approves
Distributed Resources Standard
IEEE has approved the new standard, IEEE 1547.1,
"Standards for Conformance Test Procedures for Equipment
Interconnecting
Distributed Resources with Electric Power Systems." The document
includes specifications for the production and commissioning tests
needed to confirm that the interconnection functions and equipment of a
distribution resource meet the requirements in IEEE 1547, "Standard for
Interconnecting Distribution Resources with Electric Power Systems,"
which addresses the performance, operation, testing, and safety of
interconnection products and services. For the full text of the new
standard, visit IEEE's Web site.

Power Quality Analysis You Can See!
The PowerPad is a hand-held, three-phase power quality meter with an
easy-to-read graphical color display. Measurements are displayed along
with color waveforms.
The analyzer is menu-driven with direct access functions that are
activated by push button. All measurements and waveforms can be
displayed and stored for a comprehensive power system. The PowerPad has
a logging function, a transient- capture function, and an event-capture
function. An optical RS-232 and an advanced software (DataView), which
can pilot the PowerPad and provide comprehensive reports is included. www.aemc.com
Factory Capacity Utilization
Rises
According to the Manunfacturers Alliance/MAPI's
quarterly survey of 60 financial executives in manufacturing, capacity
utilization at factories rose to 78.4% in June from 76.5% in June 2004.
The survey's report also states that the capacity utilization index,
based on the percentage of firms operatiing above 85% of capacity, rose
from 34.3% in March to 36.7% in June, while the percentage of firms
operating at less than 75% of capacity fell from 11.9% to 8.3%. Over
time, sustained increases in factory output and utilization may create
higher demand for factory construction. For the complete report, visit
the Manufacturers
Alliance/MAPI Web site.
VDC Predicts
Growth for Wireless Mesh Networking in Industrial Applications
According to VDC's new study, "North American Market
for
RF/Microwave Wireless Monitoring and Control Products in Discrete and
Process Manufacturing," shipments of wireless mesh networking products
may grow from $6.1 million in 2004 to $25.1 million in 2007, a compound
annual growth rate of 60.2%. The study states that while ZigBee-enabled
products were available in 2004, products created under the ZigBee
Alliance specification, based on the IEEE 802.15.4 standard, accounted
for just $500,000 in 2004 and are expected to account for only $7
million in 2007. To access the full report, visit VDC's

NASI Report Finds Employers' Workers'
Compensation Costs Rise Faster than Benefits
According to a report from the National Academy of
Social Insurance (NASI), employers' costs for workers' compensation
grew
faster than combined cash benefits for injured workers and medical
payments for their treatment. The report states that the cost increase
in 2003, the most recent data available, continues a trend that began
in
2000, when workers' compensation costs and benefits relative to wages
were at their lowest point in the last 15 years. Total workers
compensation payments for injured workers rose by 3.2% to $54.9
billion,
while employer costs rose by 9.6% to $80.8 billion. The report
concludes
that despite the recent rise in costs, both costs and benefits in 2003
remain far below their peak levels relative to wages. Total payments
for
cash benefits and medical care combined peaked in 1992 at $1.69 per
$100
of wages, which is 52 cents higher than in 2003. Costs to employers
peaked in 1993 at $2.16 per $100 of wages, which is 45 cents higher
than
in 2003. To read the complete study, visit NASI's
Web site.
