DOE Awards Grant
to New Mexico Energy Intelligence Project
The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) recently awarded
$250,000 to the three-way partnership, comprising Albuquerque's
University of New Mexico, Public Service Co. of New Mexico (PNM), and
Rio Rancho-based Energy Control, Inc., to study how technology can help
utility customers use electricity more efficiently. The Energy
Intelligence project is part of a nationwide effort by the DOE's Office
of Electricity Delivery and Reliability to improve the way power is
shipped, distributed, and used by customers. According to the Energy
Intelligence project, by analyzing how, when, and in what quantities
customers use electricity for heating, cooling, and to run appliances,
utilities can develop systems to better match supply to demand. Over
the
next few months, PNM will work with the university's mechanical
engineering and physical plant departments to examine data the
university collects on its own power use. Energy Control, Inc. will
assist in the development of a Web portal through which the utility can
communicate instantly with customers to inform them when demand or the
price of power is high. Customers can then temporarily turn off some
appliances to reduce the amount of power they are consuming.
Texas Experiences
Growth in Industrial Project Spending
The Southwest Region, which includes Texas, Louisiana,
Arkansas, and Oklahoma, is experiencing 29.1% growth in project
spending
in 2006, compared to the same time in 2005, says the latest monthly
update to the North American Industrial Spending Index published by
Sugar Land, Texas-based Industrial Info Resources. The company
identified 480 active projects totaling $16.4 billion for 2006.
Approximately 71 projects totaling $386 million have already been

Construction
Worker Shortage Plagues Florida
Reconstruction efforts in Mississippi and Louisiana
have
caused a shortage of workers in Florida, where the state's Agency for
Workforce Innovation recently identified 1,451 positions available for
qualified electricians. Any respite in the worker shortage caused by
the
slowdown in residential construction has been taken over by the
increase
in the commercial construction business. Statewide, construction is the
second-largest industry in Florida, employing 627,000 workers, second
only to the tourism industry.
