Down from 2006
The U.S. Mid-Atlantic region is experiencing a decline
in industrial project spending in 2007 when compared with 2006, says
the
May 2007 update of Sugar Land, Texas-based Industrial Info Resources'
"North American Project Spending Index." According to the report, the
Mid-Atlantic region is the only U.S. region currently showing a decline
in spending when compared with last year. The region has decreased from
$24.76 billion in 2006 to $21.64 billion in 2007, a 12.6% decline. The
region comprises Maryland, North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia,
West Virginia, and the District of Columbia. Virginia, with 122
projects
totaling $6.7 billion, and North Carolina, with 178 projects totaling
$6.7 billion, are the region's leading states for project activity this
year.

IEC Opposes SAC
Fee
With the loss of funding from the the Bureau of
Apprenticeship (BAT), some states using the State Apprenticeship
Council
(SAC) program are proposing assessing a fee to each apprentice, reports
the Independent Electrical Contractors (IEC), Alexandria, Va. IEC is
opposed to this effort, and the Executive Committee has been asked to
issue a statement.
OG&E Files
Construction Initiative
Oklahoma City-based OG&E Electric Services recently
filed with the Oklahoma Corporation Commission the first part of a
six-year construction initiative that is estimated to include up to
$3.3
billion in major projects designed to expand capacity, enhance
reliability, and improve environmental performance. The bulk of the
plan
includes strengthening and expanding the electric transmission,
distribution, and substation systems and replacing aging
infrastructure.
Other projects involve installing new emission-control equipment at
existing OG&E power plants. The proposal begins with construction of
the Red Rock coal-fired electric generation power plant, a 950MW
generating unit planned in partnership with AEP-Public Service of
Oklahoma and the Oklahoma Municipal Power Authority.
AmerenUE to Invest
$1 Billion
in Infrastructure
St. Louis-based AmerenUE recently announced plans to
invest $1 billion over the next three years to improve reliability,
upgrade delivery systems, and enhance environmental performance of its
power plants. Named "Project Power On," the three-year initiative
comprises four components designed to address the region's current and
future energy and environmental needs: $300 million for
undergrounding and reliability improvement, $135 million for tree
trimming, $84 million for circuit and
device inspection and repair, and $500 million to
address the growing energy needs of the region by installing
environmental controls on existing plants so that they meet or do
better
than federal environmental standards.

Storage Facility
Project in Maine
Stetson, Maine, is currently requesting bids for the
construction of a sand-salt storage building. Scope of work includes
construction of a 7,000-square-foot sand-salt storage facility with an
asphalt shingle roof, electrical (power and lighting), mechanical
ventilation systems, concrete retaining wall perimeter, associated
site
clearing and grading, and limited paving. The project must be completed
by Oct. 1. Bids will be accepted until 1 p.m. EST on July 27. For more

Lighting Upgrade
in Virginia
The County of Henrico, Va., is soliciting proposals
from
engineering design firms for lighting replacement at the Glen Allen
Softball Complex in the Fairfield Magisterial District The existing
four-field complex is 30 years old and all existing poles, fixtures,
and
wiring will be removed. The entire system will be re-designed and
re-engineered for replacement between the end of the 2007 season and
the
beginning of the 2008 season. Proposals will be accepted until 2 p.m.
on

secured a $990,000 contract with Jack Jennings & Sons, Inc., Orlando,
Fla., for the new hospice in the Comforter building under construction
in Altamonte Springs, Fla. The Palmer team is providing electrical
contracting services that include wiring, fire alarm, and
communications
systems for the two-story, 36,710-square-foot health care facility.

Technology & Solutions Division, has launched a Web site dedicated to
promoting the safety and health of users of Caterpillar products.
According to the company, visitors to the site will find information
that reinforces safety messages found in the company's official
Operation and Maintenance Manuals (OMM). The site also covers the world
of safety in motion. For the first time, Caterpillar videos on
walkaround inspections and operating tips are available on demand from
one online source.Other SAFETY.CAT.COM offerings include OMM

WEEC 2007
The World Energy Engineering Congress (WEEC) will be
holding its 30th annual conference from August 15-17 in Atlanta. Topics
