Global
Market
for Large and Advanced Batteries Worth $11.4 Billion by
2012
The global market for large and advanced batteries is
expected to grow from $8.8 billion in 2007 to more than $11.4 billion
by
2012, according to Wellesley, Mass.-based BCC Research's technical
market research report, "Large & Advanced Battery Technology &
Markets."
This marks a compound average annual growth rate (CAGR) of 5.1%. The
report broke the market down into motive, advanced portable, advanced
stationary, hybrid electric vehicle (HEV) and plug-in, and
developmental
applications. Of these, advanced portable has the largest share of the
market. Valued at $3.4 billion in 2007, this segment is expected to
reach $4.2 billion by 2012, a CAGR of 4.1%.To read more on this

Energy-Efficiency
Plans Passed in Illinois
Illinois regulators recently approved energy-efficiency
plans proposed by the state's biggest electric utilities to help
customers reduce energy use and lower their bills. The utilities were
ordered to develop efficiency programs by 2007 legislation that
required
$1 billion in rebates and refunds to cover skyrocketing electric
bills. To read more on this topic, visit EC&M's Web

Net Metering Report
According to a report from New York-based Network for
New Energy Choices, New Jersey leads the nation in net metering, while
Arizona lacks any statewide rules, leaving utilities to make their own.
"Net metering" is when solar energy users generate more electricity
than
they use, feeding excess back into the electric grid in exchange for
credit to be applied at times when the sun isn't out. Under Arizona
regulations, says the report, the local utility companies have such a
low cap on how much net metering they'll allow credit for that it
prevents larger installations from coming in. Tucson Electric Power
caps
the reimbursement level at 10kW, which is much lower than places with
statewide rules, some of which set caps at 1MW or 2MW.To read more

Energy-Efficiency
Program Proposed in Missouri
St. Louis-based AmerenUE recently proposed quadrupling
annual spending on efficiency programs to $56 million by 2016 to slow
the rate of electricity demand growth. The utility, which sells
electricity to 1.2 million Missouri customers, will spend $14 million
this year and plans to ramp up its investment over the next eight
years,
according to a plan filed with state regulators. The utility's goal is
to reduce energy demand growth by about 25%, or 540MW, by 2025. Without
those efforts, demand in the utility's service is estimated to rise by
2,000MW, equivalent to the size of two midsize power plants. To read
