National Lighting
Bureau Says Millions of U.S. Buildings Could Benefit From Lighting
Upgrades
More than 2.2 million of the nation's 2.7 million older
(pre-1980) commercial buildings have been using the same lighting for
the past three decades, according to the National Lighting Bureau (NLB),
Silver Spring, Md., citing data published by the Department of Energy's
(DOE) Energy Information Administration (EIA). NLB estimates that three
million or more commercial and other non-residential buildings are
candidates for money- and energy-saving lighting system upgrades. To

NEMA Publishes
Metal Cable Tray Systems Standard
The National Electrical Manufacturers Association
(NEMA), Rosslyn, Va., has published VE 1-2009, "Metal Cable Tray
Systems." The standard is also published by the Canadian Standards

New Report
Identifies Best Program Strategies for Realizing Energy Efficiency in
Industry
A new report by the American Council for an
Energy-Efficient Economy (ACEEE), Washington, D.C., highlights
successful program strategies to realize the large potential energy
savings in the industrial sector. The report, "Industrial Energy
Efficiency Programs: Identifying Today's Leaders and Tomorrow's Needs,"
finds that industrial-sector energy savings have remained untapped by
many existing publicly funded energy-efficiency programs.Energy
efficiency in the industrial sector represents a low-cost resource
compared with other sectors, but running successful programs for this
sector requires different approaches than are traditionally used in
other sectors. The new report identifies leading industrial programs and
successful program strategies and suggests directions for programs
looking to start or expand offerings to realize the energy-efficiency

New Residential Solar Service in Oregon
Foster City, Calif.-based SolarCity recently announced a
new residential solar service for Oregon homeowners. SolarCity's

Diesel Generator
Installation in Connecticut
U.S. Army Engineer District, New England, Concord,
Mass., is soliciting bids for the installation of a new 15kW standby
diesel generator, day tank, and automatic transfer switch at the Goshen
Relay Station, Goshen, Conn. As part of this contract, the existing
generator and all other replaced generator-related items shall be
removed by the contractor and should be included in the bid price.

RFI for Utility
Management Services in New York
The Long Island Power Authority (LIPA), Uniondale, N.Y.,
recently issued a request for information (RFI) for electric utility
management services. LIPA contracts for services to support the
day-to-day operation and management of its electric utility system.
These services include, but are not limited to, transmission and
distribution facility operation, planning, engineering, construction,
customer service, meter reading, billing, collection, and financial and
operational reporting, along with associated support services. The
contract between LIPA and the current service provider, National Grid,
expires on Dec. 31, 2013.The primary intent of the RFI is to solicit
information from potential service providers to help LIPA assess its
options for the provision of electric utility management services in the
future. Of particular importance to LIPA is gathering information that
emphasizes ways to maximize customer satisfaction and operational
efficiency. It is anticipated the RFI may lead to the issuance of a
request for proposals for electric utility management services in early

Total Construction
Spending Expected to Drop Next Year
Despite the expected recovery of residential building in
the second half of 2009, total construction spending on an annual basis
is expected to fall 12% this year and 4% in 2010, reveals the "Third
Quarter U.S. Construction Briefing" from IHS Global Insight, Lexington,
Mass. Looking at the market as a whole, real total construction spending
is not expected to rebound with double-digit growth on an annual basis

Steel Plant
Maintenance Supervisor Suffers Electrical Burns
On Oct. 13, a maintenance supervisor suffered electrical
burns during a fire at the Severstal North America plant in Dearborn,
Mich., according to Sean Delaney, staff writer at Press & Guide
newspaper, Southgate, Mich. Authorities say the man was injured when he
attempted to extinguish a fire that had broken out on a conduit pipe in
the rolling mill. The electricity flowing through the pipe was still
active when the incident took place."He climbed a ladder and was in
the process of using an extinguisher to put out the fire when the energy
arced," says Tim Prokop, battalion chief of the Dearborn Fire
Department. "That sent about 440V coursing through his body. He's lucky
to be alive."

2010 IEEE IAS
Annual Meeting
The IEEE Industrial Applications Society (IAS) has
issued a call for papers for its 2010 IEE IAS Annual Meeting, which will
take place in Houston from October 3-7, 2010. Papers are being solicited
on the technical interests related to industrial applications of
electrical energy, especially studies pertaining to industrial
automation and control, electrostatic process, and the appliance, metal,
and mining industries. The deadline for submittal is January 15. For
