The Class of 2011 Arrives With Pride Amid Sadness

 Electronic Design Staff

It has been a tough year for the electronics industry as we mourned the loss of giants like Jim Williams, Steve Jobs, and Bob Pease, all inaugural members of our Engineering Hall of Fame. But these pioneers weren’t alone, and this year we’re proud to salute six new inductees: Bob Adams, Robert H. Anderson, James Early, Richard W. Hamming, Ken Olsen, and Fred Terman.

ECU MCUs Slam The Brakes On Car Thieves

Paul Whytock, Editor-in-Chief, Electronic Design Europe

German chip company Infineon recently announced 32-bit microcontrollers with embedded security hardware that’s designed to frustrate the lives of car thieves. These controllers, part of the AUDO MAX family and the new AUDO MAX SHE (Secure Hardware Extension) microcontrollers, provide additional security to car electronic control units (ECUs).

The Eagles, Rod Stewart, And Electronics

 Louis E. Frenzel, Communications Editor

A recent trip to see the Eagles in concert in Las Vegas prompted some thoughts about the role of electronics in these big-budget shows. What kind of hardware and software does it take to produce such a huge sound system while preserving audio quality? The same goes for the lighting and video components of the show.

The Next Level Of Design Entry: Will 2012 Bring Us There?

 Frank Schirrmeister, Contributing Editor

The industry needs huge productivity improvements in both hardware and software design over the next 10 years. Hardware can no longer be developed independently of software considerations. However, the engines used to execute representations of the hardware on which software can be developed, debugged, and verified are rapidly growing closer together. To achieve the required rates of increased design productivity, automation must be pushed to higher levels of abstraction.

Melding Measurements With Design Software

Shelley Gretlein, Sherry Hess, and David Hall

The design of RF/microwave circuits and systems has grown in complexity as customers ask for smaller, denser electronic designs with more functions at lower cost. Advances in computer-aided-engineering (CAE) software tools are aiding those efforts, allowing engineers to incorporate actual measured results into their designs.
