Led by strong impetus from the Energy Star program (which now includes a new "Super Star"category), energy-efficient motors drives are turing up in the high-volume consumer market. Processor power can now be had for a reasonable cost, and advanced microcontroller-based systems now make it possible for consumer devices to use topologies seen only in high-end gear just two to three years ago. Moreover, designers are turning more towards energy efficient three-phase systems and permanent magnet and brushless dc motors whose cost has dropped substantially. The TT420 combines a temperature sensor, signal conditioning, and 2-wire loop-powered 4-20mA transmitter into one compact package. The ST420 detects magnetic pulses from a rotating shaft-mounted magnetic pulser target (disc or wrap) and outputs a smooth, continuous 4-20mA analog signal in direct proportion to the pulse frequency (rotating shaft speed). www.electro-sensors.com (http://www.electro-sensors.com/index.php/cPath/30) ---------------------------------------- --News to me: Most people don't know about the incandescent phase out While 74% of Americans have switched to an energy-saving light bulb in past year, the vast majority still don't know incandescent bulbs are being phased out starting in 2012. And a majority of people say they are likely to purchase a CFL, halogen or LED bulb in the future. So says the recently completed Osram Sylvania 2009 Socket Survey which serves as a barometer of the changing landscape for energy efficient lighting. Beacon Power Corp. says it plans to hire approximately 50 new employees this year at its Tyngsboro, Mass., headquarters, as it ramps up production of its grid-scale flywheel energy storage systems. It started constructing the nation's first full-scale 20-MW flywheel frequency regulation plant late last year in Stephentown, New York. The plant has been designed to provide frequency regulation services by absorbing electricity from the grid when there is too much, and storing it as kinetic energy in a matrix of flywheel systems. When there is not enough power to meet demand, the flywheels inject energy back into the grid, thus helping to maintain electricity at a steady 60 Hz.
