Find It Difficult to Do Business in China's Coal Industry
BEIJING (Interfax-China) -- Chinese regulations still

coal industry after the country jointed the World Trade Organization in
2001, an official from Asian American Coal Inc. (AACI), an
American-based coal company that recently was the first foreign
enterprise to obtain all necessary licences, said yesterday at a news
conference. Read

State ruling ensures mine

Surface coal operators in Pennsylvania must post
sufficient bonds to cover the entire cost of environmental cleanup, a
federal appeals court ruled Thursday.
The ruling affects mines bonded under Pennsylvania's "alternative"
bonding system in effect from 1981 through August 2001, according to
attorney Kurt Weist, lead counsel for Citizens for Pennsylvania's

EIA U.S. Coal Supply &
Demand
For the second time in four years, the coal industry was
brought to the forefront of the nation's consciousness in 2006, as two
separate events unfolded which involved coal miners trapped underground.
Unfortunately, the tragic results of the 2006 incidents were not the
same as in 2002 when the trapped miners were all successfully rescued.
In January, two different incidents, both in West Virginia, focused the
public's attention on the dangers that miners face on a daily basis. As
a result of these unfortunate events, new legislation requiring
improvement in safety in underground mines passed both at the Federal
and state level. For the year 2006, a total of 47 miners died on the
job, matching the total number that occurred in 1995, and more than
double the 22 killed in 2005.
