CPSA News
This is the final call for papers for CoalPrep'08.  The CPSA Technical Program Committee is looking for abstracts of +/- 200 words on any subject you feel would be of interest to the attendees at CoalPrep.  New or modified plant papers are always well received as are papers on dewatering, comminution, sizing, automation, and of course coal washers - for both coarse and fine size coal.  If you are aware of someone who is doing something interesting/innovative, send me a contact name.  The quality of the technical program is dependent upon the abstracts we receive - we need your help!

Send abstracts to Al Deurbrouck at adeurbrouck@juno.com before September 5, 2007.  The Program Committee will review all abstracts received and put together the technical program.

The Journal of the Coal Preparation Society of America (CPSA) is looking for articles and news items of interest to the coal preparation community. Articles can be technical in nature or of broad general interest such as a discussion of industry trends. Articles about the construction of new coal cleaning plants or upgrades to existing plants are always of interest. Please send news items, articles, or ideas for articles to Dave Akers at dakers@cq-inc.com or call 724 459-4815. Also, comments or suggestions about the Journal are always welcome.

South African Coal Preparation Conference And Exhibition In Parallel With The Pittsburgh Coal Conference
COAL PROCESSING IN A CHANGING WORLD

Sandton Convention Centre - Johannesburg.
10 - 14 September 2007

The biennial South African Coal Processing Society (SACPS) Conference and Exhibition will be held at the Sandton Convention Centre in September this year in parallel with Pittsburgh International Coal Conference. It is the first time that an event of this magnitude will take place in Africa for the coal industry.

Speakers that you can look forward to hearing

Top international experts in all facets of the coal industry will address the world coal industry.

Ernst Venter, Executive General Manager of Coal at Exarro Resources Ltd will be hosting the opening technical address covering the whole coal chain. His experience in southern Africa's coal and its related industries is unprecedented.

Various appointments from managing coal beneficiation at the coal face of Grootegeluk Coal Mine through to his present position, where he handles Exxaro's strategy development and execution for its Coal Division, has made Ernst Venter one of the most prominent coal experts today.

Further technical papers that will be presented by the international community will be from Dr Peter Bethell, Barbara Arnold, Hulky Springer, Chris Barbie and Richard Woodward, all from the United States, Paolo Bozzato from Italy, Dave Osborn from the United Kingdom, and a whole host of top coal processing experts from South Africa. See the attachment of the Technical Programme for further information.

EIA U.S. Coal Supply & Demand
For the second time in four years, the coal industry was brought to the forefront of the nation's consciousness in 2006, as two separate events unfolded which involved coal miners trapped underground. Unfortunately, the tragic results of the 2006 incidents were not the same as in 2002 when the trapped miners were all successfully rescued. In January, two different incidents, both in West Virginia, focused the public's attention on the dangers that miners face on a daily basis. As a result of these unfortunate events, new legislation requiring improvement in safety in underground mines passed both at the Federal and state level. For the year 2006, a total of 47 miners died on the job, matching the total number that occurred in 1995, and more than double the 22 killed in 2005. Read More...
