Conference News
Attendance at the technical
program at CoalPrep'07 was a smashing success.
The highlights included 240 people attended the Keynote
presentation by Dr. C.F. Reinecke, Sasol, COAL-TO-LIQUIDS -- CHALLENGES
AND OPPORTUNITIES INTO THE FUTURE. A session on general coal cleaning
drew 140 attendees and 160 people attended a session on new and upgraded
coal preparation plants. A session on the future of conversion of coal
to liquid and gaseous fuels drew, to our surprise, 72 attendees.
Something new at CoalPrep'07 was an MSHA presented: ANNUAL REFRESHER
TRAINING FOR IMPOUNDMENT INSPECTION QUALIFIED PERSONS. This will beheld
annually at CoalPrep so here is a chance to get your required annual
training and attend CoalPrep in Lexington in coming years. CoalPrep'08
will be April 28 thru May 1.
We hope to have a session on new and upgraded plants at CoalPrep'08. I
already have two papers promised. So I am looking for two more at least
for a full session -- help!
In fairness I am looking for abstracts on all aspects of coal
preparation for CP'08.
E-mail your +/-200 word abstracts to adeurbrouck@juno.com THANKS! Our
programs at CoalPrep are no better than the abstracts the Technical
Program Committee receives.

EIA U.S. Coal Supply &
Demand
For the second time in four years, the coal industry was
brought to the forefront of the nation's consciousness in 2006, as two
separate events unfolded which involved coal miners trapped underground.
Unfortunately, the tragic results of the 2006 incidents were not the
same as in 2002 when the trapped miners were all successfully rescued.
In January, two different incidents, both in West Virginia, focused the
public's attention on the dangers that miners face on a daily basis. As
a result of these unfortunate events, new legislation requiring
improvement in safety in underground mines passed both at the Federal
and state level. For the year 2006, a total of 47 miners died on the
job, matching the total number that occurred in 1995, and more than
double the 22 killed in 2005.
