The CPSA is looking for advertisers and of course
writers. Our Journal is self supporting and basically doing just fine.
However, we have increased the size of the Journal from 24 pages the
first few years, to 28 pages by the fourth year, to 32 pages at present.
This means we need more advertising money to cover the additional
costs, and more articles to fill the additional pages.
If you would like to contribute an article or if you have ideas for
articles, columns, etc., please contact our Editor, Dave Akers --
Telephone 724-4594815 or E-mail dakers@cq-inc.com

Regulatory reform needed for
Ohio's energy future
Last weekend, the 17th District was in the spotlight as
Gov. Ted Strickland, area legislators, including State Reps. Clyde
Evans, John Schlichter, David Daniels and several representatives from
the coal industry converged on Wellston during the town's annual coal
festival.
In conjunction with the festival's activities, these state and local
leaders were invited to participate in the Ohio Coal Summit, a meeting
of interested parties to discuss the state of coal in Ohio and the
industry's vital role in our energy future.

Eagle Coal executive got an
early start
When the 340 miners, prep plant employees and loading
dock workers at Kanawha Eagle Coal want to talk to management, they go
to Bob Ellis.
His official title is vice president of operations, but the fact is,
he's management personified. Following the 44-year-old around is like
following Billy in the cartoon, "Family Circus," because he's
everywhere: in and out of the company's offices, bath houses and mines,
greeting employees, asking about their kids, quizzing them about
production and cracking jokes. Read

Attorney offers free help to
coal miners who blow the whistle
Whistleblowing coal miners have a friend to turn to if
they feel operators are turning on them for turning in safety hazards.
Launched Monday, the West Virginia Mine Safety Project, aimed at
providing free legal assistance to miners, is an initiative of the
Appalachian Center For the Economy and Environment, and is the
brainchild of Buckhannon attorney Nathan Fetty
"I watched the Sago disaster unfold last year, and it seemed as if there
was disaster after disaster," Fetty explained Monday from his office.
"It just really struck a chord with me. And being an attorney, I wanted
to pursue some public interest work anyway. This just seemed like a
natural fit."

Consol Energy and SES
investigate gasification of waste coal
Consol Energy Inc., one of the USA's largest bituminous
coal production companies, and Synthesis Energy Systems, Inc. have
entered into an agreement to investigate the development of coal-based
gasification facilities to produce feedstock for various industrial
chemical manufacturers. The collaboration will also investigate the
feasibility of producing substitute natural gas (SNG) to meet the demand
for clean, affordable energy.
'If this agreement develops as we hope,' said J. Brett Harvey, president
and chief executive officer, 'it will expand significantly our total
energy production profile and will meet our continuing objective of
capturing the full value of all our assets. In this case, the
achievement of the goal is amplified because the process creates an
asset of a waste stream that would otherwise be on the balance sheet as
a liability.'

New coal-washing plant under
design for Botswana colliery
Process plant design specialist company DRA Minerals
Projects has been commissioned by mining company Debswana to design and
construct a coal-washing plant at its Morupule colliery.
The colliery is a coal operation located about 15 km from Palapye, in
Botswana, about 280 km from the capital, Gaborone, and about 120 km from
the South African border post at Groblers Bridge. The colliery has been
in operation since 1973 and the Botswana Power Corporation coal-fired
power station nearby has been its main customer.

EIA U.S. Coal Supply &
Demand
For the second time in four years, the coal industry was
brought to the forefront of the nation's consciousness in 2006, as two
separate events unfolded which involved coal miners trapped underground.
Unfortunately, the tragic results of the 2006 incidents were not the
same as in 2002 when the trapped miners were all successfully rescued.
In January, two different incidents, both in West Virginia, focused the
public's attention on the dangers that miners face on a daily basis. As
a result of these unfortunate events, new legislation requiring
improvement in safety in underground mines passed both at the Federal
and state level. For the year 2006, a total of 47 miners died on the
job, matching the total number that occurred in 1995, and more than
double the 22 killed in 2005.
