Clean Air Violations
U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Region 5 has reached an agreement with American Energy Corp. on alleged clean-air violations at the company’s coal preparation plant at 43521 Mayhugh Hill Road, Township Highway 88, Beallsville, Ohio. The agreement, which includes a $40,000 penalty, resolves EPA allegations that AEC failed to comply with testing, notification and reporting requirements at the plant that processes coal from a coal mine. Massey mine to receive safety award
The federal Mine Safety and Health Administration plans to give a safety award to a Massey Energy Co. underground mine where two men were killed in a January 2006 fire. Massey announced the award for its Aracoma Coal Co.'s Alma No. 1 and Hernshaw mines Monday. The award recognizes Aracoma for having no lost-time injuries while miners worked 574,000 hours at the mines in 2007. MSHA also is giving the same award to a Nicholas County coal prep plant, Massey said. Read More...

Mining companies seek to reclassify Greene County stream for coal plant
The South Fork of Ten Mile Creek curves lazily beneath arching sycamores as it flows through hills and farm fields west of here. It holds small-mouth bass that hit harder than a punch and one of its tributaries once supplied water for this Greene County seat. Now, though, Baltimore-based Foundation Mining LP wants to knock out the protective "High Quality Warm Water Fishery" tag hung on the South Fork and its tributaries in 1979, when Pennsylvania first classified its streams. No power plant aids N-aquifer Black Mesa Environmental Impact Statement to be reactivated
The Black Mesa Environmental Impact Statement is being reactivated, however the preferred alternative, which includes the C-aquifer pipeline, reportedly will be eliminated. John Stucker, senior mining engineer for the Navajo Nation Minerals Department's Surface Mining Program, said Friday that with the closure of Mohave Generating Station, Alternative A is no longer necessary, because the coal slurry pipeline that transported coal from Black Mesa Mine to Mohave is no longer operating. Botswana: Multi-Million Drilling Starts At Mmamantswe Coal Mine
Dual-listed energy concern Aviva Corporation has started a $3 million reserve upgrade drilling programme at its 1.3 billion tonne Mmamantswe coal Project. Aviva managing director Lindsay Reed said the resource estimate affirmed the project as very low strip ratio open pit thermal coal deposit. "The resource base has the potential to supply six million tonnes per annum to both a 1,500MW power project and/or direct coal sales to the power sector in South Africa. Aviva is now focused on advancing the project through drilling to deliver a significant resource upgrade," Reed said. Read More...

Indonesia's Adaro coal output to rise 5 pct in 2008
PT Adaro Indonesia, the country’s number two coal miner, expects its coal production to increase by about 5 percent to 40 million tonnes this year, an Adaro shareholder said on Tuesday.
Sandiaga Uno, whose investment fund Saratoga Capital owns 32 percent of the coal mining firm, said that Adaro is “still on track” to raise between $400-500 million in its initial public offering , probably around September. Read More...
