New products galore
by Kurt Lawton

Included in the August new product introduction by John Deere in Cincinnati, Ohio, were several exciting new product additions to the Ag Management Solutions (AMS) offering -- to help growers make money with precision farming. Listen to comments from Doug DeVries, senior VP, Agricultural Marketing for John Deere, who outlined what's new at the product launch meeting.

And watch a video interview with Mike Park, factory marketing manager for Deere's AMS group, who gives an overview of new AMS products.

Here are more details on the latest from AMS...

New from Deere: Save seed costs with Swath Control Pro for planters

Adel, Iowa, farmer Lowell Garrett saved an estimated $7,000 on his seed costs this spring (2 to 3% seed savings over 5,000 acres) by investing $4,000 in John Deere's new Swath Control Pro technology. And that savings occurred on basic rectangular fields with no point rows and only headlands -- where the least amount of benefit is usually seen.

"For growers who are still new to precision farming technology, our new Swath Control Pro for planters may be the initial piece that entices them to get into precision farming due to quick payback on valuable technology," says Kayla Reynolds, product marketing manager, John Deere Ag Management Solutions (AMS).

New from Deere: Apex field mapping software update

John Deere has upgraded its Apex farm management software and released a free beta version 2.0 to seek customer feedback before it launches the production version in early 2008.

Several customer cooperators have already tested the improvements, and their positive feedback prompted John Deere to release this beta test version.

For more information and to request the software CD, visit the Apex 2.0 beta release page.

New from Deere: Control fertilizer costs with GS2 Rate Controller

The GreenStar 2 (GS2) Rate Controller, introduced last year to offer pull-type sprayer rate control and eliminate the cab clutter of another rate control device, now offers expanded capability to control certain anhydrous amonia (NH3) and liquid fertilizer applications.

"With the new delivery system, an operator controls fertilizer application using the touch-screen GS2 display without the need of a second console in the cab," says Kayla Reynolds, product marketing manager, John Deere AMS.

"This GS2 expansion offers four benefits to the grower," she says...

New from Deere: Improved GPS signal aids AutoTrac auto steering

As precision guidance continues to help growers lower input costs, save fuel and reduce passes in a field, John Deere continues to build greater accuracy into its software to bring more value into its equipment.

A free upgrade on the John Deere StarFire iTC receiver gives growers two benefits: a sub-inch repeatable Long Range RTK signal 12 miles from the base station (expanded from 6 miles), plus Shading Optimization so AutoTrac won't drop a signal if some trees or other obstructions cause momentary line-of-sight loss between vehicle and base station antenna.

"Precision guidance technology continues to improve with better software to allow greater accuracy in variable field conditions...
