Hands-free AutoTrac Universal
Steering Upgraded
Growers looking for a hands-free steering system that can easily
transfer between combine, sprayer and planting tractor—fitting more
than 450 brands and models—should check out the improved AutoTrac
Universal Steering Kit 200 (ATU 200).
Gibbon, MN, grower Peter Kramer cites advantages such as being able to
plant longer in a day with less fatigue and not worry about following a
marker when it’s dark. Scott Chestnut, who farms near Boone, IA, says,
“AutoTrac allows you to operate when visibility is impaired by dust,
driving into the sun or at night trying to finish before a rain.”
Listen to Kayla Reynolds, John Deere Ag Management Solutions (AMS)
marketing rep, discuss the improvements
of this steering platform that works with the GreenStar or GS2
system, no matter what GPS signal you receive from Deere (SF1, SF2,
RTK).
“A big customer request we delivered with this update is the ability
to save vehicle settings, making transfer between vehicles easier,”
says Laura Robson, AMS marketing rep. “No need to retune the ATU 200
every time you move it. Just select your vehicle from the list and the
correct settings are automatically ready to go.”
Other improvements include:- Higher torque motor captures the line
quicker after an end row turn, and it maintains the line across the
field at higher speeds, which is useful for spraying and spreading —
even in rough conditions.
- Maintenance of components, including chain, sprocket and resume
switch, is easy.
- ATU fits more John Deere vehicle platforms, which now include more
than 450 different brands and models of farm vehicles. Visit stellarsupport.deere.com

StarFire RTK Networks
Grow
Farmers are investing in precision technologies at a rapid rate,
thanks to a robust farm economy combined with a need to reduce input
costs and find more efficiency.
In fact, a new survey
of Ohio growers found that autoguidance systems and RTK signals are
the most rapidly adopted of all precision technologies.
“With the growth in autoguidance adoption, combined with growth in
highly precise practices such as strip-till and drip-tape installation,
John Deere dealers have invested in more than 900 RTK towers to grow
networks that now cover 140 million acres,” says Kyle Collins, senior
marketing rep for John Deere AMS. (Click on the map below to see the
areas of coverage.)

“When we extended our line-of-sight RTK
signal from 6 to 12 miles last summer, more and more dealers got on
board to build networks, working with local growers to deliver signals
that increase their efficiency and reduce input costs such as fuel,
seed, fertilizer and more,” he says.
Growers Murray and Steve Peterson from Stromburg, NE, like the improved
productivity and stress reduction of their StarFire RTK signal. “We
now get maximum productivity out of every acre because the sub-inch
accuracy is very important to our planting operation. There is no more
stress; it is amazing,” Steve Peterson says. “Now we’re adding
documentation, field mapping, Swath Control Pro and Pivot Pro this
year.”
Listen to John Deere marketing manager Mark Theuerkauf discuss the
company’s growing
RTK coverage and expanding tower or base station networks now
available to more farmers.
AMS consultant Christ Meyer says, “Many of my Nebraska customers are
seeing savings in seed, chemicals and fuel per acre, as well as seeding
more rows of crop per field. And their custom applicators are happy
because of straight rows.”

Manage Harvest Data for
Profit
Better crop management decisions begin when growers start to
document, map and understand harvest data. Whether you have a GreenStar,
GS2 or another receiver, it takes a robust software mapping program to
bring out the best in your data.
“Our Apex
Farm Management software allows growers to generate harvest maps
that help plan such operations as nutrient management and seeding rates
the following spring,” says Kim Fletcher, AMS marketing rep.
“Growers can easily prepare all farm and field info — from specific
crop varieties to fertilizer programs and more — and load it into the
display before heading to the fields.”
Historical
Apex data can help a producer:- Make appropriate management
decisions
- Enhance and maximize crop productivity
- Optimize soil nutrient levels
- Compare hybrid/variety productivity
- Compare and analyze harvest data for multiple years
- Visualize trends
- Identify and control field drainage issues
- Identify, analyze, and control pest infestations
- Create accurate and adaptable prescriptions
- Appropriately plan input purchases
“Each year we update Apex
twice. One recent benefit we’ve added is a popular ‘select by
attribute’ feature where growers can highlight any portion of a map to
learn specific yields and moisture for that given area,” Fletcher
says. “And we’ve added a live update feature that will automatically
keep the software updated when growers connect to the Internet.”

Improved Yield Monitor
Moisture Tracking
Yield monitors remain the backbone of precision decision making,
and John Deere continues to invest research to improve its separate
systems for cotton, forage and grain tracking.
“Our three systems give growers the information they’re looking for
in the cab as they go through the field,” says Kim Fletcher, AMS
marketing rep. “They can read continuous yield and moisture data, keep
track of it by farm and by field, and can upgrade the system without
changing components to document all data.”
The latest improvement is a new moisture sensor for self-propelled
forage harvesters. “This improvement, our HarvestLab
technology, helps growers react quickly and make informed management
decisions at harvest and during storage to maximize silage/feed quality
from the day it is harvested until the day it is fed or sold,”
Fletcher says.
“By knowing accurate moisture levels, forage producers can adequately
apply inoculant amounts to sustain nutrient retention and curb dry
matter loss. Plus, our HarvestLab sensor offers the added benefit of
being able to remove it and take it into your office to conduct manual
readings of silage or forage samples,” she says.
