Vegetable pests light as desert harvest starts
As harvest on cole crop and lettuce fields in the Arizona and Imperial Valley regions was moving forward, sources reported that crop quality was excellent and pests were generally light.

Secondary pests popping up
With unseasonably warm weather, changing crop patterns, and fewer applications for worms and other pests in desert vegetables, PCAs are reporting that grasshoppers have been appearing in larger than usual numbers.

Acreage stable for fall vegetables
According to the USDA’s most recent assessment, acreage for fall vegetable crops in the California desert remained relatively unchanged from 2007.

Markets mixed on desert veggies, melons finish strong
The desert melon harvest was quickly winding down toward the end of November, and sources say cantaloupes that escaped CYSDV and soil fungus problems were fetching significant returns.
