Technicians who want to establish, expand or maintain their qualifications need to have documented training — pump training to work on pumps, aerial training to work on aerials, shop management training to manage maintenance shops. Chief Victor Voss of the Amherst (Wis.) Fire District wants everyone to know that the district operates a fleet of modern apparatus. As part of that effort, he has identified replacement dates for each of the apparatus and posted them on the Web. FEMSA Announces Annual Survey The Fire and Emergency Manufacturers and Services Association has announced its fourth annual State of the Fire Service Survey. Participants are eligible for a chance to win $5,000 worth of equipment for their department from any FEMSA member. Apparatus American LaFrance Releases 2007 Chassis American LaFrance has released a 2007 Detroit Diesel engine package for its Eagle chassis. Announcements about other engines and chassis are expected to follow. Miami-Dade County Buys Rosenbauer Aerials Miami-Dade County (Fla.) Fire Rescue has ordered 14 Rosenbauer apparatus equipped with aerial ladders. It is part of a larger order expected to be placed over the next five years. Summit Fire Apparatus Turns 50 Summit Fire Apparatus celebrates its 50th anniversary in 2007. The company built its first apparatus — a tanker for the Walton (Ky.) Fire Department — in 1957. Whenever a department writes the specifications for a new apparatus, part of the process should be to look at apparatus being delivered to other departments around the country. What are they specifying? Why did they select a particular chassis or component? How do they feel about their choices now that the apparatus are delivered? Components TFT Introduces Remote-Control Intake Valve
Task Force Tips now offers a remote-controlled version of its recently introduced Jumbo Ball Intake Valve. It gives the same high flow and low pressure drop as the manual version, with the convenience of easier operation on apparatus designed with the intake located away from the pump panel. Havis-Shields Offers New Ford Expedition Console Havis-Shields has designed a center console to fit in most 2007 Ford Expedition models. The unit provides room to mount communications gear and equipment in command vehicles and other emergency units. Kussmaul Develops Door Sensor for LED Lights Kussmaul Electronics has developed an open door sensor for apparatus compartments equipped with low-current LED lights. The new Kussmaul Auto Current F-6 device is a simple and reliable way to warn vehicle operators that one or more compartment doors have not been fully closed. Zico Improves Seatback SCBA Holder Zico has introduced an improved version of its SCBA holder used to secure the cylinder within the back of cab seats. NFPA Updates Standards The National Fire Protection Association recently updated several standards for fire and rescue gear. Departments should be aware of these changes before they purchase new equipment.
