Feature Get Serious about Out-of-Service Criteria By Chris Cavette, In Service Senior Editor When it comes to apparatus maintenance, there are ordinary problems and there are really serious problems. Defining the types of problems that are serious enough to take an apparatus out of service should be part of every department's preventive maintenance program. People Alexis Founder Dies Gene Morris, founder of Alexis Fire Equipment Co. in Alexis, Ill., died last month at the age of 90. Two Firefighters Killed in Tanker Rollover Two firefighters in North Carolina were killed in a rollover accident while responding to an abandoned mobile home fire with a fire department tanker. Neither was wearing a seatbelt or safety restraint. Correction The Florida EVT of the Year Award went to John Hopp, a fleet/fire technician at Orlando International Airport. His name was incorrectly spelled as John Hoop in the March 2007 issue of In Service Online. As editor, I apologize to John Hopp and our readers for this error. Whenever a department writes the specifications for a new apparatus, part of the process should be to look at apparatus being delivered to other departments around the country. What are they specifying? Why did they select a particular chassis or component? How do they feel about their choices now that the apparatus are delivered? Components Darley Introduces New CAFS Darley now offers two new high-capacity compressed-air foam systems for customers with special applications. Kenworth Offers Cat Engines Customers now can specify the Caterpillar C9 engine in the Kenworth T800 heavy-duty commercial truck chassis, including the popular short hood and front-engine power takeoff configurations of this model. Shop News EVT Group Forms in Kansas A new EVT organization is being formed to provide regular training and networking opportunities for fire mechanics, emergency vehicle technicians and shop personnel in the central part of the country. New NFPA Standard Affects Shop Work A recently published NFPA standard now applies to all aspects of apparatus work ranging from routine inspections to out-of-service criteria. It replaces several other standards and will have a major impact on fire departments everywhere. ULSD Cold Start Additive Now Available MidContinental Chemical Co. has introduced a line of ultra-low sulfur diesel additives that can help prevent fuel filter plugging in cold weather without raising the sulfur level of the fuel. North Metro Gets New Service Truck
