The Advantages of Two-Piece Engine Companies

The concept of two-piece engine companies dates back more than 100 years when horse-drawn hose-wagons ran with steamers. The concept continued after the advent of motorized apparatus, and some departments used it well into the 1970s. Although the idea of running two separate apparatus instead of a single engine may seem odd today, there are several advantages that departments may want to consider.

In the April issue of In Service Online, I discussed the need to take apparatus out of service when serious problems are encountered. I gave lots of reasons why I think departments should do it, but I also know that there are many reasons why some departments think they shouldn't. I've heard a bunch of those reasons over the years, but most end up being more myth than fact.

Chief Dies in Single Vehicle Accident
Brian Zollner, North Region Staff Chief of Operations for CAL FIRE, died after his vehicle left the road and crashed.
