Feature Basic Electrical Troubleshooting By Chris Cavette, In Service Senior Editor Electrical problems can put emergency vehicles out of service as fast as flat tires. Technicians who follow some basic electrical troubleshooting procedures often can get these vehicles up and running with a minimum of time and expense. Special Report Upgraded Water Supply Saves Town The May 2007 issue of FIRE CHIEF featured Stanley, Iowa, and the improvements it made to its water supply. People In Service Opens Nominations for EVT of the Year FIRE CHIEF magazine is pleased to announce that nominations are now open for the In Service 2007 Emergency Vehicle Technician of the Year. The award will be given to one emergency vehicle technician who has made an outstanding effort to promote a high standard of excellence in quality and safety in emergency vehicles. Technicians Achieve Master Level Certification The Emergency Vehicle Technician Certification Commission announced that several technicians have been certified or recertified as Master Technicians. Three Die in Apparatus Accidents A career captain and two volunteer firefighters died in separate accidents while responding to emergency calls in fire department apparatus. ADVERTISEMENT
Nominations are being accepted from individual fire and emergency departments that can support extraordinary efforts of a fire chief who, due to local or regional circumstances, has had a significant impact in a department and community. Whenever a department writes the specifications for a new apparatus, part of the process should be to look at the apparatus being delivered to other departments around the country. What are they specifying? Why did they select a particular chassis or component? How do they feel about their choices now that the apparatus are delivered? Components Weldon Develops Brighter LED Lights Weldon Technologies says its new V-LED light source produces the brightest LED lights on the market. The new light source was introduced at the FDIC show and is now available in a series of perimeter warning lights for fire, rescue and EMS vehicles. TFT Announces Monitor Incentive Departments in the process of specifying a new apparatus can qualify for a free monitor upgrade worth $2,500 from Task Force Tips. Reflective Dots Designed for Diamond Plate A new product allows departments to install reflective patterns on rear compartment doors and other body surfaces covered with diamond plate. Cascade Offers Free Foam System Departments that purchase a slip-on unit from Cascade Fire Equipment Co. of Medford, Ore., can get a free foam system as part of a limited offer. Cole Hersee Offers Locking Switch A new locking rocker switch from Cole Hersee is designed to prevent accidental actuation of critical components in emergency vehicles. Magnafire 5000 is Big Light in Small Package The new Magnafire 5000 area light from Havis-Shields is only 9 inches wide, but it produces as much illumination as much larger lights. Kussmaul Designs Trailer Shoreline Disconnect Kussmaul Electronics now has a special shoreline disconnect that automatically ejects an electrical shoreline when the trailer brakes are applied. Shop News EVTCC Introduces Foam Systems Exam Fire apparatus technicians can certify their qualifications to work on foam systems by passing a new Emergency Vehicle Technician Certification Commission exam. Apparatus Maintenance Section to Hold Workshop Technicians who plan to attend Fire-Rescue International in Atlanta also can enroll for the Apparatus Maintenance Section Workshop before the show. Cummins Approves B20 Biodiesel Fuel Cummins announced the approval of B20 biodiesel blends for use in its 2002 and later emissions-compliant ISX, ISM, ISL, ISC and ISB engines. This approval also includes the recently released 2007 engines. National EVT Academy Scores Another Success More than 180 emergency vehicle technicians and mechanics registered for classes as part of the National EVT Training Academy in Daytona Beach, Fla., during the week of May 14–18.
