In the July 2007 issue of In Service Online, we discussed why it is important to understand vehicle weight ratings. That isn't enough, however. Departments also need to understand how the distribution of that weight determines a vehicle center of gravity, which can affect vehicle performance and safety.

A 43-year-old volunteer firefighter in North Carolina died when the apparatus he was driving went out of control, rolled and struck a tree.

Ferrara Unveils 85-Foot Platform

Ferrara displayed its new HD-85 mid-mount aerial platform at Fire-Rescue International in Atlanta. The new aerial is designed to produce a vehicle with a short overall length and travel height.

American LaFrance to Celebrate 175th Anniversary
American LaFrance plans to mark its 175th anniversary and the grand opening of its new headquarters in Summerville, S.C., during a celebration on Oct. 19–20.


Crimson Fire Names New York Dealer
Crimson Fire Apparatus named Hendrickson Fire Rescue Equipment on Long Island as one of its latest dealers in New York.


Foster Debuts Compact Rescue Vehicle
Foster Rescue introduced a compact rescue vehicle at Fire-Rescue International in Atlanta. The new unit measure less than five feet wide and six feet tall, yet carries a variety of fire and rescue equipment.

Spokane Valley Fire District has 10 stations and protects an area of 75 square miles in eastern Washington. The department recently purchased a new shop truck to help keep its fleet in top running condition.

August FIRE CHIEF Features EVT Articles

Master Mechanic Placed on Leave After Accident
The master mechanic of a New England fire department was placed on paid administrative leave after one of the department's apparatus was involved in a fatal accident.

Did you know that vehicle batteries can explode? All vehicle batteries produce hydrogen gas, which is highly explosive (remember the Hindenburg disaster?). Even maintenance-free batteries have vents that allow the gas to escape.
