As the number of EMS calls increased dramatically, so did the number of accidents involving ambulances, and this will prompt changes. Ambulance manufacturers, the National Fire Protection Association and the National Institute of Standards and Technology all have stepped up efforts to improve ambulance design and increase safety of emergency personnel and patient transport. And the Fire Department Safety Officers Association will again offer an ambulance track in its 24th Annual Apparatus Symposium, Jan. 22-25 in Orlando. Symposium programs are designed to help chiefs, fleet supervisors and emergency vehicle technicians specify maximum safety into their next ambulance. Sessions will include how to select the right ambulance chassis, options for the interior design, and how to reduce hazards and infection in the patient compartment. “With the changes going on in addressing the safety of our personnel and the patients in the back of the ambulances, I think we’re at a time when the standards are being evaluated — and this will bring forward some major changes in ambulances,” said Anderson Township (Ohio) Fire Chief Mark Ober, who developed the ambulance track for the FDSOA’s Symposium.
