Welcome to Station Style Online
|
By Janet Wilmoth, Editorial Director
At the 2008 Station Style Conference in Phoenix, a deputy chief and a
researcher presented on contamination in the interior of fire station. I
overheard one chief say that he didn’t come to a station-design
conference “to hear about bugs and bacteria.”
Most may not have come to hear about such bugs, but most attendees were
shocked to learn how long MRSA and other bacteria can live on unexpected
surfaces — particularly on the chairs and couches. One chief
subsequently decided against carpeting the living area as a precaution.
MRSA may have provoked the discussion, but H1N1, bloodborne pathogens
and other contaminants have highlighted the need for changes in
turnout-laundering and equipment-cleaning procedures.
On a recent visit to Alexandria (Va.) Fire Department’s new Station at
Potomac Yard, I saw a room off from the apparatus bays specifically for
cleaning turnout gear. I also found a set of standard washers and dryers
that, according to Bttn. Chief John North, are to be used to launder all
stationwear. Firefighters no longer area allowed to take their
stationwear home to wash. Click

Most municipal leaders do not have experience with the process of
building a new facility. That is not unusual — most cities do not
consider such projects more than once every 50 to 75 years. But the
decision to upgrade facilities is a substantial one, and there is
obviously a tremendous value in getting it right – for immediate and
future needs. Click

We have introduced polished concrete floors throughout the stations,
with exception of the restrooms, which are still tile. We have
eliminated the use of resilient flooring and transition strips, which
always seem to be a problem. There are no adhesives and VOC’s to deal
with. Click

 Continuity
of operations for flu pandemics
Agencies are preparing for a more dangerous fall flu season as a result
of the H1N1, or swine flu, strain. The threat is a reminder that public
safety agencies must have continuity of operations, or COOP, plan, which
was established in 2004 in the Department of Homeland Security
Headquarters COOP guidance document. In the guidance, each public-safety
agency is encouraged to develop COOP plans that meet the unique needs of
the areas they serve. To learn more, Fire Chief Associate Editor spoke
to Glendale Fire Department Chief Mark Burdick about his department's
plan.
