Green Fleets
Iowa fleet green and growing

While many fleets are shrinking their businesses during this downturn, Iowa-based West Side Transport is looking ahead to economic recovery and making plans accordingly. The dry-van carrier has about 465 drivers today and already counts some of the country's major retailers and manufacturers as customers, from Lowe's stores to Procter & Gamble.

Essential testing

In its quest to be the greenest company possible, Seattle, WA-based Essential Baking Co. didn't let one roadblock stop it from trying again. The company, which produces breads, pastries and desserts, operates a pair of cafés and sells its baked goods wholesale to restaurants and institutions, wanted its fleet of vehicles as environmentally friendly as possible.

By chance, a carbon cut

Volvo: SCR will cost $9,600

Volvo Trucks North America (VTNA) has announced its Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) 2010 emissions reduction technology using selective catalytic reduction (SCR) will carry a surcharge of $9,600.

Trucking still learning about biodiesel fuel

Trucking needs to move beyond merely learning about biodiesel fuel, contends Steph Sabo, maintenance manager for Norrenberns Truck Service (NOTS). Sabo said that he still doesn’t understand why discussions about biodiesel within the trucking industry continue to be of an educational nature.

Peterbilt launches new truck aero package

It’s hard to imagine that an integrated set of truck roof and side fairings, along with redesigned mirrors, can improve a highway tractor-trailer’s fuel economy by as much as 12%. Yet that’s exactly what Peterbilt Motors Co. claims its new “aerodynamic package” can do.

Could New Jersey port adopt California Clean Trucks Program?

The average vehicle age for trucks servicing the Port of New York/New Jersey is more than a decade old and the port is unable to maintain a strong labor force due to low pay and operational inefficiencies, according to a new study completed by professors David Bensman and Yael Bromberg of Rutgers University’s School of Management and Labor Relations.

Stopping idling in New York City

Excessive engine idling in New York City threatens public health and contributes to environmental problems because laws prohibiting it are rarely enforced, according to a report by the Environmental Defense Fund.

Smith Electric Vehicles to release electric zero-emission trucks
Smith Electric Vehicles (SEV) U.S. Corp. has announced it will assemble and market all-electric zero-emission commercial vehicles in North America, initially focused on depot-based route delivery fleets. The company’s first zero-emission truck model will be the Smith Newton, featuring a top speed of 50 mph, a range on one battery charge in excess of 100 miles and a payload of up to 16,280 lbs., SEV said.

Ports get Daimler natural-gas trucks

Local civic and business leaders, executives from Daimler Trucks North America and members of the press gathered under tents here at the Ports of Long Beach and Los Angeles complex Monday to mark the delivery of 132 new natural gas (NG)-fueled tractors to drivers who contract with California Cartage Company, as well as 100 new NG trucks for the Ports’ Clean Truck Program. The event also marked the official debut of Daimler’s Set Back 113 NG truck.

Roush pushing propane-powered Ford trucks
Roush Performance said it is looking to create “green-collar” jobs at its facility here to support a new line of Ford commercial fleet vehicles that run on liquefied propane-gas (LPG).
