Recession hurting truckload

The U.S. economic recession is affecting the bottom line of truckload carriers, according to initial earnings reports, though the falloff in diesel fuel prices is softening the blow to some degree.

Fuel Prices
Diesel prices hit new low
The average diesel price in the U.S. decreased three cents to $2.27 per gallon for the week of January 26, according the Energy Information Administration (EIA), hitting the lowest level since June 13, 2005. Prices are more than $1 cheaper than they were one year ago.

LaHood, Jackson sworn in
Ray LaHood was sworn in as the sixteenth U.S. Secretary of Transportation on Friday, after being confirmed by the full Senate by voice vote on Thursday. The oath of office was administered by Linda Washington, Assistant Secretary for Administration, before LaHood’s new staff and members of the Department of Transportation transition team.

Liquid titanium added to CJ-4 oil

Sold under the Guardol and Kendall names, ConocoPhillips’ premium synthetic blend CJ-4 heavy duty engine oil has been reformulated with a proprietary additive called “Liquid Titanium” that the company said improves engine-wear and bearing-corrosion protection as well as increases oxidation stability.

ATA tonnage index falls 11.1%
The American Trucking Assns. (ATA) seasonally adjusted for-hire truck tonnage index fell 11.1% in December 2008, the largest month-to-month reduction since April 1994, a time when the unionized less-than-truckload industry was in the midst of a strike.

Detroit Diesel Corp. and ESOC (Environmentally Safe Oil Change) Commercial Truck, Inc. have collaborated to develop an Environmentally Safe Fuel Filter Change system for Detroit Diesel’s DD15 and DD13 engines, the two companies have announced.
