Stimulus said to include $150+ billion for transportation, energy, technology

Initial reports are that the final version of the federal Economic Stimulus Package includes more than $150 billion in public works projects for transportation, energy and technology. Trucking, like many other industries, is sure to feel some impact from such a super-sized spending plan, but exactly what that will be is still anybody’s guess. One thing, however, is abundantly clear--green is the color of the stimulus package no matter how you look at it.

Trucking needs to move beyond merely learning about biodiesel fuel, contends Steph Sabo, maintenance manager for Norrenberns Truck Service (NOTS). Sabo said that he still doesn’t understand why discussions about biodiesel within the trucking industry continue to be of an educational nature.

Idle reduction study to be released this summer by American Transportation Research Institute (ATRI)
This summer, the American Transportation Research Institute (ATRI) expects to release the results of a two-year study of idle-reduction systems done in partnership with fleets Schneider National, Diversified Transfer & Storage and National Freight, Inc. National and Diversified kept data on APUs, while Schneider studied thermo-cooled and battery-powered AC systems in addition to the fuel-operated heaters they already had.

Hilarides Dairy is trying a new method to minimize pollution and diversify energy sources in its trucks—converting cow waste to fuel, with the help of a $600,000 grant from the California Air Resources Board’s (CARB) Alternative Fuel Incentive Program.
