The U.S. infrastructure system needs an infusion of $2.2 trillion
over the next five years, the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE)
said in its 2009 Report Card for America’s Infrastructure. ASCE gave
the U.S. infrastructure a total grade of D, with the roads receiving a
grade of D-.

Goodyear
laying off 5,000
The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. announced it would lay off 5,000
employees and freeze salaries as the company announced a net loss in the
fourth quarter of 2008. Goodyear said it would also eliminate between 15
and 25 million units of additional manufacturing capacity worldwide over
the next two years, reduce inventory levels by more than $500 million,
and cut capital expenditures to between $700 million and $800
million.

Vipar
remanufacturing brakes
Vipar Heavy Duty, a cooperative network of independent truck parts
distributors, announced it has built two facilities for remanufacturing
brakes. One center serving the East opened outside of Indianapolis last
month and the second will serve Western markets from Salt Lake City
beginning on April 1, the company said.

Funding
for retrofits
The Diesel Technology Forum (DTF) has posted a number of resources
on its website to facilitate heavy-duty diesel vehicle and equipment
owners who want to retrofit their fleets through the $300 million in
funding to be made available by the Environmental Protection Agency
(EPA) via the Diesel Emissions Reduction Act (DERA). The six-fold
increase in DERA funding comes through the signing into law of the
Economic Recovery Act by President Obama.

PHH Arval has introduced PHH E*Toll Funds Management, designed to
give companies a uniform means of paying and tracking toll expenses
incurred by their fleet drivers, as well as reducing violations costs

truck thieves group in Philippines caught
Police nabbed yesterday the alleged leader of the “Jumpers
Gang” in the act of stealing the goods from a moving delivery van in
Binondo, Manila. A group of thieves, dubbed by the police as the
“Jumpers Gang,” would sneak onto delivery trucks and vehicles of
“viajeros,” steal their cargo and then jump off....
