New economic data highlights positive direction

Sales of new homes increased last month for the first time since July, the Dept. of Commerce reported yesterday, as sales of new one-family houses in February 2009 were at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 337,000.

Ancra broadening trucking focus
Despite the economic downturn and falling freight levels, load securement system supplier Ancra International is planning to expand more broadly into the trucking market.

Truck load-matching via cell phone
A new twist on load-matching services allows truckers to find and bid for loads using their cell phones. “Speed is really what you need in today’s freight market, so cutting down on the steps drivers and fleets need to take to search for available loads is an important part of that,” David VanBlaircom, marketing manager for GetLoaded.com, told FleetOwner at the Mid-America Trucking Show.

Study claims biodiesel reduces carbon
A new study by the National Biodiesel Board (NBB) and Chicago-based Indigenous Energy, LLC, developers of emissions tracking systems, claims that using soybean-based biodiesel can reduce carbon emissions by 78% compared to petroleum-based diesel alone on a life cycle basis – despite the fact that burning one gallon of either fuel produces almost the exact same amount of carbon dioxide (CO2).
