Under its Existing Buildings: Operations and Maintenance (EB:O&M) rating system, the U.S. Green Building Council’s Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification system allows as many as three credits for “system-level metering.” These credits, which are available under performance measurement within the Energy and Atmosphere category, mean that nearly 8 percent of the necessary credits for LEED-EB:O&M are associated with metering and/or submetering.

Providence St. Peter Hospital, Olympia, Wash., has been named the “Smartest Building in America” by Siemens Industry. The hospital earned the title in Siemens’ Smartest Building in America Challenge. Jackson South Community Hospital, Miami, claimed the runner-up title. The hospitals will share $40,000 in Siemens products and services.

The International Society of Automation (ISA) has extended its standards reach with the creation of a committee on building automation. ISA111, Unified Automation for Buildings, will develop standards and guidelines to communicate the necessary information to enable building subsystems to be managed and to interact so that an individual building; a local collection of buildings, such as a campus; or a geographically diverse collection of buildings appear to a user to be a single, coordinated, cohesive building automation-system.
