Express transportation company FedEx Corp. expects to move
more than 50 million packages through its global express, ground and
freight networks during the week of December 14, 2009, its busiest week
of the year.

Six major US West Coast ports and two western railroads
recently announced their intent to collaborate at the World Shipping
Summit (WSS) in Qingdao, China. The U.S. West Coast Collaboration
(USWCC) is comprised of six container-ports on the U.S. West
Coast—Seattle, Tacoma, Portland, Oakland, Long Beach, and Los
Angeles—along with BNSF Railway Company and Union Pacific
Railroad.

Brussels Airlines’ cargo business from Europe to Africa in
October reported the second highest monthly volume of cargo and mail
traffic in its history.

As the U.S. economy showed hints of recovery during the
third-quarter, so did intermodal results, reports Intermodal Association
of North America (IANA) on the eve of its annual conference, held this
year in Anaheim, Calif. According to IANA, year-over-year volume
comparisons improved during the quarter, with total volume off 16.4%—a
significant improvement over Q2’s downturn of 18.7%.

Central Freight Lines, a nationwide less-than-truckload (LTL)
carrier, is utilizing an SaaS transportation logistics solution from
Cheetah Software Services Inc. to remain competitive in a recessionary
marketplace. In implementing the Cheetah Freight solution, Central
Freight made the decision to focus on improving the visibility of
drivers and deliveries, while increasing the timeliness and
effectiveness of communications between drivers, dispatchers, customer
service reps and customers.

Turtle Wax, a manufacturer of car care products, has chosen
LeSaint Logistics, a third-party logistics provider (3PL) based in the
Chicago area, as the provider of its warehousing, fulfillment and
transportation needs.

and Transportation Committee, said he is working in partnership with the
US Dept. of Homeland Security (DHS) inspector general to update current
port security procedures to better protect against biological and
chemical threats, reports the National Industrial Transportation League
(NITL).
