Move over rapid prototyping

There is increasing buzz about so-called "personal manufacturing," and rightly so. Industry is now "printing" 3D parts not previously possible and directly from CAD models. Examples include components for racing motorcycles, metal patches for airplane wings, and, for that matter, metal patches for cracked human skulls. The vision: soon individuals will be able to make objects (such as that pesky lost house key) in the same way at home. A middle step to this is the Fab Labs, the idea for which came out of M.I.T. They aim to provide an incubator for local micro-businesses by bringing high-tech manufacturing capabilities to anyone. Fab Labs are springing up in the U.S. and are already found in countries such as India, Norway, Africa, and Costa Rica. Check out the video from our recent visit to a local Lab. We interviewed various parties there on topics ranging from putting fabrication in the hands of everyone and using a desktop mill to cut a 3D object to coming up with innovative concepts such as for the featured "ring key."

Going Lean alone
There is a common misconception today that the only way to adopt Lean Manufacturing techniques is to hire a consultant who leads the way. My company didn't approach Lean this way. We decided to do it ourselves and began by educating all of our 250 employees on the basics. We started by attending local seminars, reading numerous books on the subject, and visiting several other manufacturers in various stages of adopting Lean practices, most notably the Georgetown, Ky., Toyota Motors plant.

What does color mean?

Have you ever been passed on the highway by one of the ugly pink cars a certain cosmetics company gives its sales force? I think the drivers go so fast because they are ashamed to be seen in a pink car. Color makes a big impression and, believe it or not, can affect a company's bottom line.

Industrial-design software improved all around
AliasStudio 2008 software helps industrial designers of every stripe do their jobs better, from developing initial concepts through visualization and communication. Of course, the program has the necessary sketching and modeling tools. Now it also includes tools such as twist, bend, and conform that enhance a designer's creativity. Best of all, new features in the software help users cut considerable design time.

Direct Coupling Pumps Up Multiphysics
Abaqus FEA multiphysis software includes a direct-coupling interface that lets physics code developed by third-party users communicate directly with the software. Abaqus also supports protocols including the Mesh-based parallel Code Coupling Interface (MpCCI) from Fraunhofer SCAI. And a fluid-structure-interaction feature lets users simultaneously calculate the behavior of fluids and structures in a single model. Users can also perform coupled structural-acoustic, piezoelectric-mechanical, and electrical-thermal simulations.

Software Handles Enormous Assemblies
Solid Edge V20 2D/3D CAD software improves on features for plant-equipment design and shop-floor layout. For example, new assembly zones make it easier to design massive assemblies such as heavy industrial vehicles and large mechanical machines, some with 50,000 parts. The software works with the company's PLM application and a new Service Oriented Architecture that improves access to the central database from remote locations by way of wide-area networks. An Auto-constrain in Assembly feature adds parametric intelligence to imported data regardless of origin or translation method.

Industry Update

Autodesk Manufacturing Solutions has a new location
Autodesk announced its Manufacturing Solutions software unit is now located in a new 44,000 square-ft facility in Lake Oswego, Oregon. The division had been in a smaller location in Tualatin, Oregon since 1997. The company says the new location will accommodate growth as well as provide first-class R&D facilities.

Web casts for multiphysics simulation
Engineers and engineering managers interested in learning more about how multiphysics software can improve the product-development process should attend a "Realistic Simulation with Simulia Multiphysics" Web cast. One will be given at the end of July, the other in early August. For more information
