Free interface for digital
factories
|
In response to XML for the digital factory, a recent article in
MACHINE DESIGN magazine, Bill
Lydon, Director PLCopen North America, sends information on a new
XML control-logic standard for digital factory interfaces. The standard
provides an open, free, non-proprietary, software interface for the
interchange of information between CAD, PLM, controls, documentation
software, and machine and process simulations. It lets users virtually
build machine production lines and controls to ensure everything will
run as planned in the real factory. Download the standard.
Another reader writes, "It's great that you mentioned IBM's open source
office software in last month's e-newsletter. Open source applications
should be promoted as they help wean users off of unnecessarily
expensive and overloaded software. Might I also suggest Sun Micro
Systems open source Office. I have scrubbed MS Office off of my laptop
and I love Sun Office.
Comments? Questions? Send them in, and we might print them here!
Thanks for reading this newsletter, and have a wonderful day!

For prototyping plastic parts, fused-deposition modeling (FDM)
builds stronger components than any other major additive technology. But
the rough, stepped surfaces the technique generates have typically
hindered its acceptance for applications that demand smooth finishes
like those of production parts. A new smoothing process dubbed Ready
Part eliminates this problem, says Product Manager Tim Thellin of Red Eye RPM in Eden Prairie, Minn.
(Red Eye is the part-selling arm of Ready Part developer and
FDM-machine-builder Stratasys Inc.)

There is no doubt that the lower cost of labor and overhead in Asian
countries such as China, Malaysia, and Taiwan makes offshore
manufacturing attractive, especially for OEMs that have a low mix of
high-volume products, or sell their products in the region.
"Offshoring" problems crop up when companies hastily source from Asia
before they back up their decision with numbers. This spells trouble for
many small and midsize U.S. firms that lack a clear strategy, don't
spend enough to influence contract manufacturers, don't really know how
to do business in Asia, and have no access to local resources to manage
day-to-day operations.

Engineers typically must make simplifying assumptions to do an
analysis so they can determine a design direction. Creating an analysis
model requires decisions on a range of issues regarding the most
appropriate way to represent materials, loads, and constraints. Some
examples include...

Automation-software suite
|
This automation-software suite includes control programming, HMI
development, OPC connectivity, and enterprise database integration It
offers an architecture where control function like analog scaling,
digital counting, and PID loop control are distributed to I/O
processors. New functions include frequency measurement for determining
the frequency of digital states and used to read the speed of rotating
machinery, velocity encoders, etc.; period measurement for determining
how long a digital point remains on or off; analog totalization for
sampling and totaling analog input readings at predetermined intervals;
and digital totalization for determining on-or-off time of a digital
input.
Upgrades to the HMI development and runtime portion include a security
feature for user login and logout that captures operator actions during
runtime, new runtime features show the origins of controller and I/O
data, new multimedia alarming capabilities associate and play unique
sound files with individual alarm notifications, and support for 64-bit
integer tables exchanges large data arrays with the PAC controller.

CAD helps designers earn ISO
14001
|
Before it cuts any metal or stitches upholstery, medical- furniture
manufacturer Famed Zywiec in Poland uses Inventor, a CAD software suite
from Autodesk Inc. in San Rafael, Calif. It also used
Inventor to earn ISO 14001 certification in recognition of the company's
sensitivity to the environment. "We used to make four or five physical
prototypes of each product," says R&D Director Piotr Kozbial. "But 3D
Inventor models are now our prototypes. This digital prototyping
reduces waste, so it's good for the environment."

Product-data-management software PDMWorks Enterprise 2008 works with
SolidWorks 3D CAD to help engineering organizations streamline workflow,
audit documents, and securely manage engineering information. A wide
range of tools lets users create, edit, view, and manage BOMs for
improved communication and collaboration among engineering,
manufacturing, quality assurance, and purchasing. For example, suppliers
working on, say, an assembly can customize BOMs, route them for
approvals, and let reviewers edit them, without installing SolidWorks.
The software supports Czech, French, Italian, German, Spanish, Polish,
Japanese, Swedish, Korean, Russian, Brazilian Portuguese, and simplified
as well as traditional Chinese.

Rev up your interdisciplinary design skills
What happens when a microcontroller turns on a power FET, sending a
current pulse to a motor coil that develops a magnetic field which turns
the rotor shaft, advancing a timing belt that drives a pair of nip rolls
suspended on bearings in a web-processing operation on a form, fill, and
seal machine installed on a potato chip line at a Frito Lay plant in
central California? And how can you be sure that the encoders, prox
sensors, and other feedback devices you plan to use will accurately see
and report every relevant motion, machine state, and process condition?
And will the signals get through the networks fast enough, without being
corrupted, giving the controllers time to execute their algorithms as
intended? It's a lot to think about, and it only scratches the surface
of what many engineers grapple with today. If you happen to be one of
them, then the place for you — where you can find answers and meet
others with similar concerns — is www.Mechatronic-Design.com.
Backed by some of engineering's top information sources including

Linear Analysis Training Class
February 11-15, 2008
Students will be shown demonstrations of how to set up, analyze, and
investigate typical structures. Workshops let students put this new
knowledge into practice. The important features of the FEMAP GUI are
introduced and, at the same time the essentials of Nastran are explored.
Emphasis during the class is on the construction of proper analysis
models, and the effective use of the various solution types. Additional
troubleshooting techniques are discussed, as well as the various types
of common error messages generated by NEiNastran. The objective of this
class is to give a solid grounding in FEA basics and good practice to
enable the student to carry out real world linear static analysis.

 Customization for the Competitive
Edge
Sponsored by PTC
DATE: March 5th, 2008
TIME: 2:00pm ET
As customers shun the "take it or leave it" mentality of mass production
in favor of customized product development, industrial manufacturers
respond by offering more and more product options and variants.
Launching a product that can be configured to customer needs may add a
competitive edge and improve customer satisfaction, but it can also lead
to lower profits, increased costs, and strained engineering resources.
For many manufacturers, the solution is modular product design. This
webinar reviews the benefits of modular design - both for your customer
and your internal organization. We also walk the viewer through
important organizational challenges of implementing modular product
architecture, which should be considered when deciding whether or not it
is the solution for you.
