Flip the pages of Machine Design, online

An old saw says that if a picture is worth a thousand words, digital representations can be worth a million. That is certainly true in 3D CAD. In the e-news monthly Motion Monitor, my colleague Elisabeth Eitel says both Machine Design and Motion System Design magazines are now online, "just as they appear in print." Check them out and virtually flip the pages!

Making analysis a design feature
In the past, choosing whether or not to use FEA software could be a tough decision. Engineering departments raised legitimate objections such as steep learning curves, expensive hardware, and the challenge of working with CAD models. Some companies could not or did not want to buy both CAD and FEA software at the same time. They relied instead on traditional engineering methods and never really took to computer-aided engineering. Today, practically all of those objections to FEA are gone. Read the whole article

What’s the best way to capture shape data?
Scanning technology, hardware, and software have advanced such that more and more firms can make use of digital representations of physical objects in production workflows. Digital shape-sampling and processing (DSSP) adds value to all stages of design, from conception to mass customization. Read the whole article

Software for motor and generator design
Opera software for motor and generator design lets users define complex behaviors such as friction, load, and speed-dependent torques. Multiphysics capabilities show the effects of temperature and of mechanical stresses that torque will have on parts. A new front end to an electromagnetic simulator speeds design by means of fill-in-theblanks dialog boxes. Users select the required motor or generator from a list that includes induction, brushless permanent magnet, and switched reluctance motors. After users type in about 10 parameters to define mechanical geometry, material properties, and electrical data, the software creates the model. Parameters might include diameters of rotor, stator, and shaft, stator-tooth width and the number of stator slots. Vector Fields Inc., Aurora, Ill., vectorfields.com

Rev up your interdisciplinary design skills

What happens when a microcontroller turns on a power FET, sending a current pulse to a motor coil that develops a magnetic field which turns the rotor shaft, advancing a timing belt that drives a pair of nip rolls suspended on bearings in a web-processing operation on a form, fill, and seal machine installed on a potato chip line at a Frito Lay plant in central California? And how can you be sure that the encoders, prox sensors, and other feedback devices you plan to use will accurately see and report every relevant motion, machine state, and process condition? And will the signals get through the networks fast enough, without being corrupted, giving the controllers time to execute their algorithms as intended? It's a lot to think about, and it only scratches the surface of what many engineers grapple with today. If you happen to be one of them, then the place for you — where you can find answers and meet others with similar concerns — is www.Mechatronic-Design.com.

Supercharging Products with Embedded RFID
Sponsored by SkyeTek
DATE: June 26th, 2008
TIME: 2:00pm ET/11am PT

The power of RFID as a stand-alone application to increase accuracy and efficiency in supply chain management has garnered much attention in recent years. The story now is how RFID can be added as a feature to an almost unending list of products -- adding new functionality, increasing reliability and enhancing the user experience. They may still look the same on the outside, but embedding RFID readers and software into existing and yet-to-be released products can transform them on the inside offering manufacturers, OEMs and product designers new opportunities for competitive advantage through increased efficiency, accuracy and product differentiation.
