A few odds and ends for your enjoyment:
An engineering site includes a lot of nifty stuff such
as a Hire Engineers job area, a blog on Engineering Ethics, and even
Engineering TV. Scroll towards the bottom of the window to see Lee Teschler's infamous
Editorials, which tend to either provoke our reader's
ire or evoke their extreme admiration. Nothing in-between or bland
here!
Read about new "flexible electronics" made out of graphene film in
the New York Times Science Section. "Graphene is a single-layer sheet of
carbon atoms (the building block, in fact, of the graphite used in
pencils) and has properties that make electronics engineers swoon," says
the article.
Joe Moak, Product Design Lead for Apple points out a link to really
innovative product ideas for a BUG UI on Twitter.
Talk about "open"! vivalogo lists the "Top 40 Free Downloadable
Open Source Social Networking Software."

SolidWorks Corp. recently sent trade press writers
copies of SolidWorks 2009
Professional — the company’s latest version of its 3D CAD package
for mechanical
design. Being only a casual user, I wanted to learn more about 3D
modeling, so
I attended one of the developer’s training sessions at
3DVision Technologies
in Solon, Ohio. What followed was an interesting and informative 8 hours
that
included an intro to sketching, basic part modeling, and simple
bottom-up assembly
modeling. Read

Probably nothing gets shop personnel cursing faster than trying to
machine Inconel
718. The hard alloy rapidly chews through cutting tools. Casting Inconel
is not
much better because about 70% of the material gets wasted in mold gates.
Yet
Inconel is a favored metal for aerospace and turbine parts because it
withstands
temperatures from cryogenic up to 1,400°F and has excellent tensile and
impact
strength. Read

Green is still a popular color, particularly at industry events in
the Anaheim Convention Center in California Feb. 10 to 12. These events
include the Pacific Design & Manufacturing Show, MD&M West, West Pack,
Electronics West, Plastec Pavilion West, Automation Technology Expo,
Green Manufacturing Expo, and Process Technology for Industry (Powder
and bulk solids). All attendees will be admitted free to a joint
conference called “Green Manufacturing: Business Strategies for
Sustainability,” Feb. 10 to 11.

With a 25 x 26-in. footprint, the new uPrint Personal 3D Printer
from Dimension can sit on a desktop. The machine
eliminates the need to wait in line for a central 3D printer or for
models to arrive from an outside service bureau. The printer uses
ABSplus plastic that withstands functional testing under real-world
conditions. It can be drilled, machined, sanded, painted, or
chrome-plated. The uPrint costs only $14,900.

Software for 3D
Visualization
|
Sweden-based DONYA Labs holds
a number of patents on technologies that automate reducing the
complexity of 3D models. These technologies work with PLM to optimize
models
for faster simulations and real–time visualization. The company’s
Simplygon
software was recently licensed by Boeing Phantom Works, the OEM's unit
for advanced
R&D. Phantom Works uses the software to optimize construction models.
Other users
include Sony Digital Entertainment and Panasonic as well as several
computer-game manufacturers.

ThomasNet.com features more than 607,000 industrial
product and service suppliers, searchable by category. The site also
has online catalogs and downloadable 2D and 3D CAD models. The models
work with engineers' prototypes in widely used software such as Autodesk
and SolidWorks.

Energy Efficiency Web Conference & Expo – May 14
Do you know you can get in-depth education on energy-efficiency and all
the benefits of an in-person trade show without ever leaving your desk
or spending a dime?
The intelligent use of energy is making headlines. Product designers and
manufacturers are striving to deliver products that consume less power,
extend battery life, generate less heat, or work from alternative energy
sources. Our Energy Efficiency Web Conference and Expo will
educate design engineers, product developers, and managers on how to
make the best use of energy-efficient product innovations and devices,
and on how to arrange them in systems to lower power consumption and
stay "green." This special one-day event will include sessions
on such areas as:
- Power-efficient drive techniques for lighting
- ROI for high-efficiency capital equipment
- Energy monitoring and energy standards
- Designing for SEMI S23 and the Energy Act of 2007
- Working with alternative power and battery technology
Make plans now to attend the Energy Efficiency Web Conference and Expo. The
event offers a full day of live webinars and interactive booths, along
with a Resource Center where visitors can download or link to additional
materials.
