Are you modeling too
early?
|
Dear readers, you made some interesting comments about Changes in the Engineering Profession Over 80 Years,
a recent article in Machine Design magazine. For instance, Chief
Engineer at Daxon Engineering Matthew
Lowe says:
"Many years ago, before CAD became commonplace, the engineering
process began with engineers developing the products, starting at the
system level, with heavy use of models and calculations based on
engineering fundamentals to guide the design. It was only much later in
the process when 'draftsmen' became involved to render the product so it
could be manufactured.
Today, most product is created in 3D CAD and this geometry is used to
simulate product performance with FEA and CFD. The design is iterated
until management is happy. Final drawings are created off of the CAD
model (a real time saver).
CAD and other modeling and simulations tools such as FEA have allowed
more rapid and robust performance simulation, but the iterative process
lets designs be based on created geometry, rather than sound,
engineering-based design concepts. There is a significant rush to start
modeling too early and often by those without the specific expertise in
the product function.
CAD shouldn't be abandoned, but conceptual development should take place
before significant solid-modeling resources are committed to the design.
It's a great shame that many engineering organizations believe it
acceptable to replace engineering fundamentals and systems expertise
with an iterative approach. We have moved from engineer-develop-design
(drawings)-build-test-produce to render-simulate-iterate-design
(draw)-build-test-produce. In many cases, the simulate-iterate approach
is the engineering process. It is not.
Let's not get lazy with engineering just because we can make good
looking designs in CAD early and can quickly make colorful stress plots
in FEA.
I'd like to see a marriage of the traditional approach that harnesses
the best of engineering expertise and the use of engineering
fundamentals with the power of the tools we have at our disposal."

publish them here!

The design of devices such as ink-jet nozzles and piezoelectric fuel
injectors and the control of these devices, depending on their operating
conditions, demand an in-depth understanding of multiphase flow. Of
interest are the balances between surface tension and other forces
acting on the fluids, such as stresses and inertial forces. These forces
determine the shape of the interface between the different phases, for
instance, between air and a liquid. The modeling of multiphase flows
makes it possible to understand these systems and optimize designs to,
for example, cut fuel consumption of an engine or control the droplet
size in an ink-jet printer. Read the rest of the article

There are more than 60,000 job boards on the Web. Only a handful
cater to engineers. Are any of them worthwhile? Web destinations like Monster.com or CareerBuilder.com are probably one of the first
stops for engineers on a job hunt or for those just trying to keep their
options open. But engineering job seekers are likely to be disappointed
if they confine their efforts to well-known sites advertised on
Superbowl commercials. Read the rest of the article

EnSight CFD software works with the EnSight 9.0 Suite from
Computational Engineering International to let users post-process and
visualize a CFD model using only the mouse. The software includes
improved readers for analysis packages such as FLUENT and CFX. The
readers make quantities such as radial velocity, pressure gradient, and
mach number available to users automatically so they don’t have to to
manually create them. Read the rest of the article

Fortus 3D Production
Systems, a brand of Stratasys, announces SR-30, a new soluble
support material for use with ABS-M30 and ABS-M30i thermoplastics. The
material provides faster dissolve-times for the FDM additive-fabrication
process.
Compared with its predecessor (SR-20) the new SR-30 support material
delivers a 69% reduction in dissolve time in an agitation tank, and a 46
% dissolve time reduction in an ultrasonic tank, on average. SR-30 is
compatible with two of the company’s additive fabrication machines –
the Fortus 360mc and Fortus 400mc (formerly FDM 360mc and FDM 400mc). Read the rest of the article

Energy Efficiency Web Conference & Expo – May 14
Do you know you can get in-depth education on energy-efficiency and all
the benefits of an in-person trade show without ever leaving your desk
or spending a dime?
The intelligent use of energy is making headlines. Product designers and
manufacturers are striving to deliver products that consume less power,
extend battery life, generate less heat, or work from alternative energy
sources. Our Energy Efficiency Web Conference and Expo will
educate design engineers, product developers, and managers on how to
make the best use of energy-efficient product innovations and devices,
and on how to arrange them in systems to lower power consumption and
stay "green." This special one-day event will include sessions
on such areas as:
- Power-efficient drive techniques for lighting
- ROI for high-efficiency capital equipment
- Energy monitoring and energy standards
- Designing for SEMI S23 and the Energy Act of 2007
- Working with alternative power and battery technology
Make plans now to attend the Energy Efficiency Web Conference and Expo. The
event offers a full day of live webinars and interactive booths, along
with a Resource Center where visitors can download or link to additional
materials.

Understanding Key Power Transmission Technologies:
Comparing Belt, Chain & Gear Drives for OEM Projects
Sponsored by Rexnord
DATE: May 28th, 2009
TIME: 2:00pm ET/11am PT
OEM design teams are under pressure to juggle technologies with
specifications with the outcome always being a great new or improved
product. Many of these projects have Power Transmission components at
their core and the wrong technology can really hurt the end product.
Dennis Missun and Nick Derus from Rexnord have gathered
information about the critical issues that need to be considered when
deciding between belt, chain and gear drive technologies for
applications requiring 5 lbs – 100 lbs of force.
The course will cover
- Torque Density: comparing key rating systems AGMA & ISO
- Application considerations: impact of thermals, friction and
vibration
- Basics of sizing & selection: information to right-size
components
- Other Project/End Customer Considerations
- Live question/answer session with presenters
