Until lately, the field of material science has largely relied on
trial-and-error lab experiments to determine a material’s properties.
But this approach can’t handle problems such as predicting how long
the steel in truck axles will hold up. Lab experiments in this area are
impossible to complete in anyone’s lifetime. To solve the problems, an
engineer must understand how carbon atoms are spaced among iron atoms in
the steel, and how hydrogen atoms penetrate the structure as the
material degrades. Fortunately, a new approach called computational
materials science, developed at the Massachusetts Institute of
Technology, generates numerical methods that use physics and
chemistry principles to evaluate thousands of different variations in
material composition.

Interactive, 3D product documentation is going mobile, targeting
non-CAD users such as repair technicians. For example, Autodesk Inventor
Publisher Technology Preview, a free download from Autodesk Labs,
supports the creation of interactive 3D assembly instructions, operating
procedures, repair instructions, and the like. These can then be
“published” to the Web, paper documents such as Microsoft Word and
PowerPoint — and the iPhone. The phone app seemed interesting and
since I have an iPhone 3G S, I asked company representatives to publish

A new, downloadable software program from the North American Die
Casting Association is intended to help users develop the shape of
injection molding runners and gates. An improved user interface requires
fewer clicks and produces gating designs faster.

Shapeways, the online community that offers affordable access to
fabbing technologies, is offering a special new 3D printing material for
a limited time. Beginning now, up until March 14th, 3D modelers can
create 3D printed objects using a new material called Alumide. A shiny,
space-age looking material, Alumide is a mixture of the company's

NEi Fusion 2.1 from NEi Software combines Nastran
FEA solvers and a 3D modeler powered by SolidWorks. NEi Fusion 2.1
includes automatic bolt element generation for simulating bolted
connections; spatial load variability for defining hydrostatic pressure,
and nonlinear transient analysis for nonlinear time-varying events.
