The National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA) recently published NEMA WD 7 Occupancy Motion Sensors Standard. The standard was previously published as a guide to the common use of occupancy motion sensors. It covers the definition and measurement of field of view and characteristics for all manner of vacancy and occupancy sensors using passive infrared, ultrasonic, or microwave technology, either in standalone or combination.

The latest edition of NEMA's Electroindustry Business Confidence Index (EBCI) for current conditions in North America shows a sharp jump in February, rising more than 18 points to 72.5, its highest level in more than six years. The survey's measure of the degree of change in current North American conditions also rose to its highest mark in almost 2 years, soaring to +0.7 in February from +0.1 in January.

Solid-State Pressure Switches for Demanding Applications
Built from Gems proven CVD and ASIC design, the PS98 solid-state pressure switch offers greater accuracy in rough environments such as off-highway and other mobile applications. This switch is an ideal alternative to electromechanical types when cycles exceed 50 cycles/minute and broad frequency response is needed. In addition to a modular design, a host of pressure ports and electrical connections are available. Switch and switch-back points are factory set per customer specification. 0 to 6000 psi (0 to 414 bar) www.gemssensors.com

Giving Power-over-Ethernet some muscle

Ethernet, once thought to be the sole province of computer networks, has found itself linked to applications and devices far beyond its original scope. Aside from the normal computer to computer communications, Ethernet today links many diverse devices, including cameras, motor controls, VoIP phones, intercom paging and public-address systems, industrial devices for sensing, monitoring, and control, and wall clocks synchronized to network time protocols, to name just a few.

Specifying High-Performance Cables: The Devil is in the Details
Many of the problems that surround cable failure, especially in extreme and harsh operating environments, could have been avoided by selecting the correct cable from the outset. In today's world of sophisticated electronics, cable failure is not an option. This whitepaper discusses several criteria to consider when specifying high-performance cables, and helpful tips to reduce downtime and avoid failure. Download Now

Pressure sensors that stretch like skin

A chemical engineer at Stanford University has developed a pressure sensor based on a pair of transparent films of single-walled carbon nanotubes. The nanotubes act as springs, letting the sensor accurately measure forces on it as it is being pulled like taffy or squeezed like a sponge.
