Carbon Nanotubes Outperform Copper Nanowires
as Interconnects
The shrinking size of computer chips has been stalled recently over
the complications of copper nanowire interconnects on the small scale,
which involve increased resistance and decreased conductivity. Current
research indicates that carbon nanotube bundles have the potential to
surpass nanowires in efficiency.

Expert Foresees 10 More Years to Make Solar
Energy Competitive
With oil prices hovering near 100 dollars per barrel, pressure to
establish a cleaner and more efficient fuel is increasing rapidly. Dr.
Harry Gray of the California Institute of Technology explains why solar
energy may take 10 more years to become a viable competitor with major
oil companies.

Air-filter regulator
The Type-300 Gulf Buster Filter Regulator is
designed to stand up to harsh saltwater environments. The
aluminum-bodied regulator has stainless-steel parts that include trim,
internal construction (including internal valve stem), and external
hardware, including fasteners, drain valve, and adjusting stem.
The regulator comes in ¼-in. NPT porting and features 0 to 30, 0
to 60, and 0 to 100-psig output; 250-psig maximum supply pressure;
operates at –20 to 180°F; 20-scfm flow capacity at 100-psig supply
with 20-psig output; 0.1-scfm exhaust capacity with downstream 5 psig
above setpoint; and less than 5-scfh air consumption. Effect of Supply
Variation is less than 0.2 psig for 25-psig change.

Rev up your interdisciplinary design skills
What happens when a microcontroller turns on a power FET, sending a
current pulse to a motor coil that develops a magnetic field which turns
the rotor shaft, advancing a timing belt that drives a pair of nip rolls
suspended on bearings in a web-processing operation on a form, fill, and
seal machine installed on a potato chip line at a Frito Lay plant in
central California? And how can you be sure that the encoders, prox
sensors, and other feedback devices you plan to use will accurately see
and report every relevant motion, machine state, and process condition?
And will the signals get through the networks fast enough, without being
corrupted, giving the controllers time to execute their algorithms as
intended? It's a lot to think about, and it only scratches the surface
of what many engineers grapple with today. If you happen to be one of
them, then the place for you — where you can find answers and meet
others with similar concerns — is www.Mechatronic-Design.com.

Wireless Sensor Networks
A Surveer of Design Options
Sponsored by Winland Electronics Inc.
DATE: April 30th, 2008
TIME: 2:00pm ET/11am PT
Developing a wireless sensor network can be an awesome challenge or a
simple matter of picking the right module, depending on who you ask.
Off-the-shelf solutions have certain advantages, but may not be the best
overall solution to your problem. Home grown or custom solutions can be
designed to overcome specific challenges, so they can be critical for
certain projects. Learn more about the technical pros & cons of both
options in this live course.
