Recording Reality with 700 Megapixels
Imagine a digital camera with a resolution of unbeatably high caliber. Such a device would give you the edge on examining competitor’s parts, inspecting hard-to-reach installations, and documenting the scene of an accident. The only problem is that you’d still need a ruler, pencil, and paper to preserve the relativism – unless, of course, that camera could take 3D images.

Learn how connector lubricants protect contacts from corrosion, fretting and wear to ensure long, trouble-free operation by downloading the FREE eBook from Nye Lubricants. Get important tips on the factors to consider in selecting and applying connector lubricants in applications ranging from cars to machine tools to appliances to aerospace equipment.

Sensor Sense: Resistive Strain Gauges
Strain gages carry the weight of responsibility for many different types of sensors, including those for pressure, load, torque, and weight. However, their operation is based on only a simple physical property of materials: The measured resistance of a material depends on its length and cross-sectional area. Find out how developers are working to improve them.

Sports Car to be Fully Electric
In today’s market, it’s fair to say that modern cars bear striking resemblances to electric shavers. Perhaps taking inspiration from this design trend (with a focus on going green), Advanced Mechanical Products, of Cincinnati, OH, plans to start delivering the Amp, a fully electric sports car based on the two-seat Saturn Sky. The initial run is set to be about 300 cars. Take a look and see how they’ll be doing it.

New Products

Photoelectric sensor
The E58 Series photoelectric sensor has a background rejection sensor with a two-wire circuit design. Extremely resistant to chemical attack, moisture intrusion, and heavy shock and vibration, the sensor’s stainless-steel, PVDF, and tempered-glass components are mechanically assembled using FKM seals. Available with both ac and dc operation in a single unit, the sensors come in 18 and 30-mm diameters. The sensor’s visible sensing beam allows for quick setup and alignment.

Power supplies target motors, pumps
The HWS300P and HWS600P Series power supplies are for industrial equipment such as motors and pumps that demand high peak currents. The Series is said to deliver up to 300% peak output power.
The units come in three nominal output voltages - 24, 36 and 48 V - and each can be adjusted up to +10%/−20% of nominal voltage to accommodate non-standard system voltages. The supplies accept 85 to 265-Vac input voltages and comply with SEMI F47 (with 200-Vac line or higher) and EN61000-3-2 harmonic and power-factor correction standards. Standard are remote on/off and dc good signals, and overvoltage/overcurrent protections, and the 600-W model has a current-share signal for paralleling two units.
The power supplies' internal fan permits operation at −10 to 70°C ambient.

Electrical Wire Fire
A note for designers - "new" does not necessarily mean "better." Here, a high voltage electrical transmission line, fresh from installation, explodes just outside of its sub-station.

Attention time and information starved engineers

Now you can get a quick dose of literature, product, and digital information resources right in your copy of Machine Design Magazine. Look for your edition of Literature Express in the second issue of May of Machine Design. There you can request product information, catalogs, CD’s and more from hundreds of manufacturers.

Rev up your interdisciplinary design skills

What happens when a microcontroller turns on a power FET, sending a current pulse to a motor coil that develops a magnetic field which turns the rotor shaft, advancing a timing belt that drives a pair of nip rolls suspended on bearings in a web-processing operation on a form, fill, and seal machine installed on a potato chip line at a Frito Lay plant in central California? And how can you be sure that the encoders, prox sensors, and other feedback devices you plan to use will accurately see and report every relevant motion, machine state, and process condition? And will the signals get through the networks fast enough, without being corrupted, giving the controllers time to execute their algorithms as intended? It's a lot to think about, and it only scratches the surface of what many engineers grapple with today. If you happen to be one of them, then the place for you — where you can find answers and meet others with similar concerns — is www.Mechatronic-Design.com.
