Reinventing the flywheel
The ability to store electricity for later use is becoming significantly more important as the U. S. increases its use of renewable power. Storing power lets utility companies “stockpile” excess energy and deliver it when wind and solar power are unavailable or when electricity demand increases. Megawatt-hour mechanical batteries based on flywheel technology is one method under exploration.

Stirling cycle for solar power and air conditioning
There’s more than one way to make good use of the Stirling cycle. Just ask the engineers at Infinia, Kennewick, Wash. They use it in both their PowerDish, a device already on the market that turns sunshine into electricity, and StAC, an innovative air conditioner that has earned development grants from the government. Both exemplify energy efficiency and sustainability.

Electrical power standards
Two new electrical power standards — Fluke 6105A and 6100B — improve accuracy and increase voltage-channel current drive for calibrating energy meters which take power from their voltage points.
Both have the same functionality, but the Fluke 6105A’s accuracy — 0.007% (66 ppm) — better matches that of other measurement devices for sinusoidal waveforms. Fluke Corp.

Return on Innovation: Making Individuals More Productive
The value proposition for equipping technical and creative professionals has drastically changed. The unprecedented combination of economic pressure and technological advancement has rewritten the rules of how to do more with less. Teams may forego new hires or do the same work with fewer staff, yet they can avail themselves to new tools and techniques. The challenge then becomes how to equip these valuable and fewer number of professionals to be more productive and innovative.
