Today we'll look at a type of joining those of us working with rivets, adhesives, and bolts might not normally consider. I'm talking about joining two components to transfer motion or power between them with the highest possible efficiency. This could happen when you're configuring a drive, setting up a water-jet unit for precision surface prep, or getting the most out of a machining rig.

A very versatile machining center
The Tricept 9000 made by Loxin in Spain and sold in the U.S. by Hartwig, St. Louis, can mill, drill, route, deburr and finish, install fasteners and rivets, and even friction-stir weld with the right tool, according to the manufacturer. It can also handle optical inspections and touch probing. The machine uses a two-axis head, three precision actuators, and a pair of gear drives to get five axes of motion.

The design consists of a central tube and three linear actuators connected to a gimbal support on one end. At the other end, the tripod struts and tube come together in a stable triangle around the two-axis rotary head. Independently extending and retracting the struts moves the head in the X, Y, and Z axes, while the head rotates 360° horizontally and from 5 to –150° vertically. High-speed servodrives for the struts give the machine 3,500-ipm rapid traverse and 2-g accelerations and decelerations. Each of the three struts has a 39-in. stroke.

The basics of configuring drives
It can be difficult to specify drive components that transform power from a motor into a form that is useful for the load. The overall design may dictate use of basic drive mechanisms such as spindles, gearing, or belts. But the motor or motor/gearing combination determines the parameters that are optimum.

These parameters can include spindle pitch, gear reduction ratios, and other factors. Drive-system components, in turn, influence the dynamic response, control quality, and positioning accuracy.

FLOATING ACCESS HARDWARE

A captive screw assembly for permanent installation into panels of any hardness with the capability to compensate for up to .060"/1.52mm mating hole misalignment. Their patented MAThread® anti cross-threading screw technology adds value by correcting off-angle installations, reliably aligning components, and easily sliding through potentially clogged internal threads. Type PF11MW (knurled cap) meets "operator access area" requirements similar to UL 508 and Type PF12MW (smooth cap) meets "service access area" requirements similar to UL 1950. Universal slot/Phillips recess is standard. They ideally suit close centerline-to-edge applications and can be installed on painted surfaces without marring.

Water jet motion tied to precision coupling
A machine built for precise, repeatable motion is only as good as its components. That idea was clear to Jet Edge Inc., St. Michael, Minn., when it designed a high-rail gantry water-jet.

The machine cuts, prepares surfaces, and removes coatings from metals, stone, composites, glass, rubber, and plastic up to 20-in. thick. Servomotors and ball-screw actuators in the cross and side beams control simultaneous motion in the X, Y, and Z axes, letting the nozzle trace cutting paths with bidirectional repeatability of 0.001 in. at speeds up to 1,000 ipm.

New Products

Leakproof fluoropolymer fittings
Pureloc compression fittings, for mating fluoropolymer tubing, come in a dozen styles. The fittings are made from virgin-grade, chemically inert PFA fluoropolymer and offer unrestricted flow, as well as lock and sealability. Each fitting consists of a nut, gripper, ferrule, and body.

Purelocs can be disassembled and reused. Available styles include elbows, straight connectors, tees, adapters, and reducing and bulkhead types. Sizes range from 1/8 to ¾ in.

Machine replaces chemical priming for hard-to-treat surfaces
The Enercon Plasma3 VCP surface-treating machine provides atmospheric plasmas for difficult-to-treat surfaces on wire, cable, and tubing. The machine eliminates expensive priming and batching as well as hazardous chemical surface preparations.

The machine cleans, etches, and prepares a wide range of material surfaces that would otherwise be unresponsive to adhesives and inks. The machine treats conductive and non-conductive surfaces.

Visible-light and UV-curing adhesives
Dymax 3000 series adhesives bond polycarbonate, PVC, phenolic, acrylic, metal, glass, and ceramic. They have low dispensing viscosity, are VOC-free, and absorb little moisture. The adhesives work with dissimilar substrates. The material cures under UV and visible light systems including the company’s BlueWave LED high-intensity spot-curing device. Here, an array of cool, surface-mount LEDs in an 8-mm-dia lightguide emit over 2,500 mW/cm2 in a narrow band centered at a 410-nm wavelength. Users can adjust intensity output from 0% to 100%.
