No twisters or swingers
allowed
Weldments are frequently subject to torsional loading. Unfortunately,
designers often overlook such loading. Two recent articles in our sister
publication, Welding Magazine, examine several design rules that permit
weldments to be optimized for torsional loading. In Part I, Don't get
all twisted up, author Omer W. Blodget, Sc.D., P.E., senior design
consultant with The Lincoln Electric Co., describes the behavior
of weldments subject to torsion. Under such conditions, he suggests
designers use closed sections wherever possible. Unfortunately, not all
weldments lend themselves to closed sections. In Part II of the series,
No twisters or swingers allowed, Blodget explains and illustrates
two additional design rules for dealing with torsion.

Enclosure performance hinges on hardware
There are several basic points for a designer to consider when spec'ing
hinges for enclosures. According to Southco Inc.'s Product
Manager, Hinges and Positioning Technology, Jim Ford it's important to
identify industry standards (NEMA or IP sealing), load requirements,
aesthetics, and environmental conditions early in the design. Taking the
time to do so helps minimize total product costs and maximizes hardware
and enclosure performance.

Fast Setting Epoxy Adhesive Has One to
One Mix Ratio
Master Bond
EP24 is a new high performance two-component epoxy adhesive that sets in
10-15 minutes at room temperatures. Durable, tough EP24 has a convenient
one to one mix ratio weight or volume. Adhesion to similar and
dissimilar substrates is excellent. EP24 is resistant to many chemicals
and is a superior electrical insulator.

Sensor film shows assembly clamp needs a
redesign
Load cell and torque/pressure sensor maker Futek recently had
problems assembling load cells to spec. The load cells employ a metal
foil strain gauge that's adhesively bonded to the sensor. The spec calls
for 50 to 75 psi of clamping pressure during assembly. Technicians ran
nondestructive tests (NDT) on production assemblies using a pressure
sensing film that changes color under different loads. The procedure
showed that clamping pressures ranged from 50 to upwards of 200 psi
during some production runs.

Shaft collar with adjustable clamping
EasyLock shaft collars from Amacoil Inc. exert 90 to 1,124 lb of
holding force on case-hardened shafts (Rockwell 55 or higher) using a
flat metal ring canted at an angle along the shaft. Users can adjust
that force using a hand-operated control on the device.

Mating holes misaligned? Not a problem for
self-clinching fasteners
Floating self-clinching fasteners for permanent installation into thin
stainless steel sheets can be specified with locking or non-locking
threads and will permit up to 0.030 in. (0.76 mm) total adjustment for
mating hole misalignment. Non-locking Type A4 and self-locking Type LA4
fasteners provide load-bearing threads in stainless sheets as thin as
0.038 in. (0.97 mm) and greater with hardness of HRB 88 on the Rockwell
"B" scale. Available thread sizes range from #4-40 through #10-32 and
M3 through M5.

PTFE-coated aluminum foil tape
D/W 351 is a heat-resistant tape made from a PTFE-coated 0.005 in.-thick
aluminum foil. The 3003 grade aluminum foil is coated on the other side
with a pressure sensitive silicone adhesive for a sure grip on metal,
glass or ceramic surfaces. Properties are consistent because of the
foil's uniform thickness of 0.005 in. with a tolerance of ±5%.
The tape is used in high volume heat-sealing equipment in food packaging
and bagging and as a limited-use wear strip. It comes in widths from
0.5 to 12 in and roll lengths of 11 yards.

Preload indicating washers
Preload Indicating Washers (PLI) provide an accurate method of measuring
the preload (clamp force) in a bolted joint and are useful with joints
that are inaccessible to torque wrenches. No special tooling is required
in the application of these washers. Three types of PLI washers are
available. The standard washer is designed for use under locknuts to
induce an average preload of 80% of the yield strength in bolts ranging
from 80 to 260 ksi minimum ultimate tensile strength. An under-the-head
version is used in applications where space limitations make it
impossible to install an under-the-nut washer, and oversize PLI washers
are for use with re-worked joints. Sizes range from #10 to 1.5-in.
diameters in alloy steel, cadmium-plated to QQ-P-416 and corrosion
resistant A286 material, passivated to ASTM A967 specifications.

Hinge safety interlock switches
SI-HG63 Series of hinge safety interlock switches can replace standard
hinges on swinging guards, gates or doors. They have a highly robust PBT
housing and stainless steel hinge and can withstand harsh plant
environments. They have two normally closed safety contacts and one
normally open auxiliary contact for greater application flexibility.
When the SI-HG63 hinge switch is activated, these normally closed safety
contacts are forced open by a nonresilient mechanical means (not reliant
on springs), interrupting the electrical circuit and sending a stop
signal to the machine control. The switches are also repositionable,
with a safety switching point that is easily adjustable
(±1.5°) throughout the hinge's full 0 to 270° range of
motion. They are rated IEC IP67 and each hinge can support an axial and
radial load of 1,200 N (approximately 120 kg).

China is now the largest fastener producer in the world, with over 7,000
fastener manufacturers, reaching a massive sales value of USD7 billion
for 2007. Consequently, Messe
Frankfurt has established a new fair, Asia Fastener, as a
trading venue for a range of mechanical fasteners and connectors. Asia
Fastener will be the first fully international and professional trading
venue for all types of fasteners in Southern China. The event will run
alongside Asiamold from 24 - 26 September, 2008 at the
Guangzhou International Convention & Exhibition Centre.
